Re: oak tri-clover gasket

I just did a quick Google You have to be careful with that now Ralph or you'll turn up lots of posts over at that other place saying many things are ok that are not even allowed to be discussed here on this forum. Besides if you believed everything you read on google you would be repeating the fact...

Re: aussie yeast

I recently made a very nice run using malt extract and Cooper's yeast from OZ. I thought it was a very fine ale yeast. The wash tasted excellent for a beer with no hops. I would have thought if Cooper's was available here in the USA it would certainly be available in OZ. By the way the whitedog made...

Re: Inverting Sugar ?

I know, I know. The name invert sugar comes from the fact that one of the ways of classifying sugars is from how much they rotate light. Different isomers(chemically identical but different molecular arrangements) behave and rotate polarized light different amounts. Sucrose rotates light in a partic...

Re: White Sugar Nutrients Informantion

Ah damn, those cold temps will kill it every time. I use a heating pad on the small fermenters in the house and a heater band on my 55 gallon poly's. I keep my house at about 72 so ferments usually are fast. Wait until July and then you can see one go in 36 hours if it doesn't kill itself from the h...

Re: Deathwish Wheat germ recipe

I have never found surface area of suspended solids to have any affect on fermentation. Yeast floats free and does not have the ability to attach itself to any thing. I have fermented nearly clear sugar washes with a good balance of nutrients and the only visible solids in the wash was the yeast its...

Re: Thumper?

The boiler on a C803 is only filled with water the wash enters up in the column. This style column can sit on the ground if preferred. The boiler is connected through a pipe and the column and boiler are completely separate. The stuff in the bottom is stripped wash. The bottom section is generally c...

No problem. I just know several homebrewers that swear by calcium chloride even when mashing good wholesome barley. HBD has lots of articles promoting CaCl for mashing.

Re: Thumper?

What size would you say the doubler section is? It is more a function of depth rather than volume. The depth is affected by either an overflow, or the amount of vapor coming in vs. the amount going out. The amounts are more controlled by the container heat radiation. If the material the container is...

Re: Rice using enzymes

White polished rice is a bit strange to convert using enzymes. If you are using that store bought mixture to convert rice, it will not convert well because of the lack of calcium for the catalyst and chlorine for activation. A very small pinch of calcium chloride will fix that.

Re: mashing with corn

Like Dunderhead said, the corn doesn't really start gelatinizing until about 180F. The pre-malting helps to break down a bit of the thick gloppy corn past because the alpha-amylase is usually tolerant to temps up to 180 for a very short amount of time. Just long enough to liquefy the gelatinized sta...

Re: Goslings Blask Seal

The herbal notes of the Gosling might be attributable to the combination of cane juice and French oak. I have gotten close to the flavor of Gosling by using my FFM cut by half with cane sugar and aging on French oak which was charred with mapp gas which leaves it less smoky. I started with a full st...

My friend John, a mile a way or so, ordered a PDA-1 out of Canada. He had the feds show up at his house asking what it was for. He told them "I've got well water and it is for water purification" and they left. I guess it was the customs people who flagged it. This is a rather out of the o...
