Re: The ugly rig
I finally got a chance to run a wash through the rig. All in all it went pretty well. The small tabs holding the bowl on aren't working like I wanted. I ended up using a piece of fine chain running from the handles of the pan around the copper tube. Worked just as well ;) Other than that this is a d...

Re: Brown sugar, white sugar and molasses
It fermented out well. I watched the pH rise until it finally stopped and then I distilled. I believe the total time was around 5 days, though it had stopped on the 4th day and I waited an extra day just to be sure. It ran fine in the still and I ended up collecting around 1.5L and it tasted pretty ...

I just got it cleaned out and plan on running a wash through it in the next day or so. As long as it works and is safe I will be happy.

Here's my little workhorse after tinkering. The pot is a 16qt stock pot. The flat lid was replaced with was a universal with a glass center. It will become legal when they can effectively charge (read TAX) enough to equal or surpass what they are getting through prosecuting offenders.

Stainless steel fabrication and care
I'd like to share a bit of info on stainless steel. Most of the stainless steels we use are austenitic and contain at least 16% chromium. We know these as the 300 series (303, 304, 316L etc). When the chromium reacts with oxygen a passive layer of Cr²O³ is formed. This protective layer is what gives...

Re: Brown sugar, white sugar and molasses
Here's what I ended up starting with. 3lbs white sugar 2lbs brown sugar 1lb Unsulphured Molasses 1 small can of tomato paste Mixed up it all up to around 4 gallons of water. I was concerned with the pH and thought about adding some lemon juice, but my pH meter said it was around 4.5 which is good en...

I am assuming that pepping up the yeast would be required for a wash with more total dissolve solids?

Brown sugar, white sugar and molasses
I'm currently transitioning from straight sugar to molasses, but I'd like to take it in steps for my own record. Right now I have white and brown sugar and a small container of unsulphured molasses and I'd like to make a wash using the three ingredients (along with nutrients for the fungi), but I'm ...

Ever have one of those days...
I was putting my new top-end together and for some reason I couldn't get the joints to solder. I started out using a propane torch and had all kinds of trouble controlling the heat. So I disassembled the joints, cleaned them again and switched to a oxy/acetylene torch. Well the 1/2" went a litt...

I sorta figured that. I can go either way, but having the vertical rise will allow me to keep the whole package a little more compact.

Re: Going to try to run my first wash tonight.
The Baker: I knew it was low, but I'm so used to using high volumes I figured I'd have enough to run a small burner for a few hours. My big burners use around 1.2 bar when running and I use 3 at a time. Just a miscalc on my part. I should have checked before hand. RefluxFan: Don't get me wron...
