Re: out with the kitchen aid in with mega-mill
Inside that 4" stainless section are some hammer bits that crush the grain down. I load the white PVC tube with whole grain, that feeds into the rotating assembly that pulverizes the grain that then exits out the 90 that faces down into the container. I added a picture of what is inside the 4&q...

out with the kitchen aid in with mega-mill
I got tired of the kitchen aid grain mill. So I went and built this one. Drops the grain in on top of a mixer dispersion blade. It will do two 50 LBS bags in an hour....All assembled with 4" tri-clamps for easy cleaning and disassembly....

Re: Puking with a thumper
Another thing that helps if you are mashing in a differant vessel other than the still is to fill the sub up with 2 to 3" of water and let it boil/steam out for 20 minutes before filling and running the mash. This gets the side boards and the barrel warmed up. I also preheat the tails in on a s...

Re: Puking with a thumper
You have to use the tails from the previous runs, anything else will cause over flow and puking (I've tried both). The mash has too much water in it and fills the thumper up. the size of the thumper should be around 15 to 25% the liquid volume of the still with a liquid level about half the barrel (...

from start to finish I do everything from mashing to fermentation and distilling with out transferring....I installed air jets for mixing the mash and for initial heat up (to around 155 F) to aid in not scorching to the bottom.

Re: a sub compact design submarine
The new burners really helped with scorching (way more even heat). The drilled out tubes I had in there before created a hot spot and would cause problems. The new burners and fire box (better venting and larger head space) solved that problem. I ran a 80% Rye/20% barley run last week flawlessly wit...

salvaged some old boiler burners
Buddy of mine looking out for my interests dropped off this full set of burners he salvaged out of an old school Burnham boiler that was going to the scrap yard. With a little fire box modification they couldn't have fit any better, and they work magnitudes better than the drilled out pipe burners I...

Re: Copper to Stainless sizing issues
type M copper ID is actual, type L and K are heavier, so the ID will be smaller. Same goes with all steel/stainless pipe listed other than sch 40 (less than 40 is larger ID, greater than 40 is less ID) ....on the 54mm question, have you looked into getting a 2" copper pipe to copper tube coupli...

I do... Air is triple filtered and dried (same unit I use on my paint guns)....As far as steam goes I do have a steam kettle and have done quite a bit with steam. I'm learning that the potential for air is universal..Mixing, cooling, and agitating. As well, it helps pre heat the copper top and the t...

air injection for mashing, mixing, cooling, anti scorch
On my recent build I included 2 air injection tubes to aid in the mixing of grains and to prevent scorching during heat up. Works very well. I drilled out about 10 holes in 2 stainless tubes and inserted them into the side of the boiler. I run about 5 to 8 psi for mixing the grain and crashing temp,...

The sides are made of Douglass Fir (it was that or either white pine around these parts). I did a tongue and groove type joint where the 2 x 4's in both pieces where grooved 1/2" and then pounded in a 1/2" x 1" filler piece between the boards. I then wrapped them Jute twine (bees wax ...

Montana you can own one, just can't use it for distilling spirits...You can go down to the brew store or planet natural and buy one over the counter. ER309L filler material also works well......3/32" ER309L rod, 125" dia 2% thoride @ 60deg bevel, DCEN, 90 to 130 AMPS (depending on thickness)....have to focus more heat on the copper since it dissipates (conducts) heat at a higher rate....Lead free soft solder works as well, just have to ...

Re: what do ya think? ideas?
hey there goodtymes, you just want to make sure coil is submerged under the water level, looks like you have it there. The other is you might install an adjustable damper on the top of the milk jug (same as a fire place) this will slow down the heat from rising and you can run a smaller flame. Other...

no circulation pump needed,, just one of the ends of the coil needs to be below water level, the other above water level A lot of commercial kitchen kettles that have built in steam generators utilize this design ..Couldn't find the utube link....

something to consider (see picture)....not sure i would put an open flame on that jacket..may weaken and split with open flame and pressure..The pressure trol switch voltage would need to match the voltage for the gas valve. Thermocouple would be needed as well for the pilot light...any joints on th...
