RUM AND FRUIT FLIES
I have been keeping three fermentors going, one with a neutral bran wash, one with a corn flake/flaked rye/oatmeal/brann flake wash, and one with a rum wash. Since the weather has gotten warmer the rum wash has fruit flies non stop. i use a capped bubbler half filled with water. i have tried everyth...

Re: All Bran Recipe
Walking Wolf I use a recipe very similar to what u used. To get a more intense flavor I use a sour mash method. Save enough of the left over backset from each run to start a new wash. After 4 generations the flavor will be very distinct and well worth the effort. Another trick that adds flavor is to...

Re: Candy Flavoring
Funny you should post this. Last time I posted about something "unnatural" i was almost run off the board. I had considered making a post on a quite succesful try i had with a candy called Hot Tamales. It is a cinnamon flavored candy found most often in Movie Theaters. My supermarket had l...

Re: First Run: All Bran Questions
DoubleBarrel, I have run 12 washes of this basic recipe so far and intend to keep it as the basis of my neutral and whiskey wannabe runs for the foreseeable future. Rads basic recipe is great for making a neutral and if u run it through a reflux column you will get a nice neutral that has less heads...

Re: All Bran Recipe
This is in response to Rad's question about yields achieved. I made a spirit run of my fake whiskey wannabe based on this recipe yesterday (6.25 gallons of 40%), and a run of the original tried and true recipe for neutral today (5.5 gal of 43%). I had taken off a half cup of foreshots in each of my ...

Re: All Bran Recipe
Aquaneo the yeast u had links to are fine to use. In fact, the first link u had to regular fleschmanns dry yeast is the same that i use, except I can buy it in bulk at a Gordons Food Store (a distributor to commercial restruants, bakeries etc. that lets ordinary customers come in to buy also). I jus...

Re: All Bran Recipe
DIYhooch, I have made about ten washes of this recipe with a few variations. After I did my first one i had the same thought as u about the boiling time. Now all I do is bring it to a boil then shut off the stove and prepare the rest of the wash, it usually takes me 15 minutes before I get to the po...

An update on what i have learned about this recipe after running 4 generations of my canadian wannabe and 4 batches of standard recipe. Using 2 gallons backset for canadian wannabe. Read more. Not long ago I was in the same position as you. Didnt have enough information to make a good decision. I too thought buying something on the market would be a better/easier choice. I had almost convinced myself to buy the same unit. People on here soon encouraged (browbeat?) me to make my...

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
Shiner your best bet if you have a question on how much yeast to pitch it to do a starter one or two days prior. Their are a number of ways to do it, but the easiest I have found is to take a 2 quart jar add one quart of of 90 f water. To this add a quarter to half t of DAP and a couple teaspoons of...

Re: All Bran Recipe
Ok, I have committed a sin. I have completed two of Rad's Original Recipe and came away so impressed that I am using it as the basis for some experiments. The first is adding extra adjuncts such as rye and corn flakes to make what i call a canadian wannabe. The second experiment I wanted to try is i...

Rewind. I too had a prob with the finishing temp because of all the extra heated products besides sugar you add. Column Length vs Purity vs Running Time
I had been wondering why my purity level was in the high seventies and lo eighties on the first run of my pot still. It also seemed I was running much longer then what others were to get these results. I read a recent post where someone asked the same question and he was told he was running too slow...

Re: Splenda
I was just wondering if anyone used it as a sweetner to make a panty dropper, Not to use in a wash for distillation. Most of the recipes I have seen for a liquor panty droppers use 30 to 50 percent by volumn sugar. Lots of emty calories. In doing a serach using splenda there were no references to it...

Splenda
Has anyone ever used splenda to make liquers with instead of sugar? I know many who would appreciate a lower calorie drink. The main problem would be the texture of the drink. I think splenda would result in a much thinner tasting drink then most are used to in liquors. Maybe there is something that...
