Another mass poisoning in India. Seems this happens a lot over there, poor, greedy and stupid seem to play big parts. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/nationworld/la-fg-toxic-hooch-in-india-leaves-84-dead-20150620-story.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="no...

Welcome aboard... Read, Read, Read..
If your considering brewing then I would do so. It will give you some experience with fermentation, sanitation and material handling.
As said above, lose the pressure cooker and get a used beer keg, go from there.

Re: light and fermentation?

Yes it does, but its not hard to control. Keep them out of direct sunlight, if light is a problem cover the fermentation vessels with a tarp or something to keep the light off of them. Sunlight contains Ultraviolet, that's the stuff that causes sunburn. It also can be used to sterilize water in a zi...

Re: Confused about vapor escape

Hmm, I don't think I would worry about that little bit of escaping vapor right before your product starts to run, thats Fores anyway. As long as it stabilizes and no more vapor after your fore collection you should be good to go.

Sounds like there was water in he jacket, it froze and collapsed the output tube.
Make sure your condenser is not holding water when you put it away.

means water that is not mineral hard.
A water softener pulls out most if not all mineral content and leaves H2O behind

Haven't made my best yet. The Mango Likker was mighty tasty, got another batch of that to Finnish up, tasty stuff. Working my first UJSSM, 1 more stripping run then ready to spirit run, good stuff. I made a big batch of Birdwatchers, used it as a bast to soak Pears, Apricots and black berries in, th...

Welcome to the forum As stated above, Red, Read, Read... A few of those "Basics" you mentioned: Is the wheat Malted and crushed? Was the corn cracked? Did you cook the Mash? 4 or 5 days is way too fast this time of year for the thing to even think about being done. If you have this thing s...

Re: filtering ujssm and sweetfeed whisky

Not if your following the recipes as posted, not using Turbo yeast and the like. The resin for carbon filtering is to remove undesirable fusels and esters that you get from Turbo or running to high an ABV in your wash. Use Bakers yeast or Distillers yeast and keep the ABV to 10% and take some care i...

Re: computer that helps to improve your spirit

By the time your checking output you don't need a computer, you need a way to measure it and see what ya got, which should pretty much match the calculations you did up front. I run my parrot and hygrometer in line with my take off, gives me real time reading drop by drop. Its not rocket science, us...

The crosstube unit looks to be their version of a Boca which is primarily designed for use as a reflux still. The Eco Trad looks to be a regular pot still head, its meant to be run only as a pot still, should work fine but will limit what you can do with it. No idea why it costs more than the Eco un...

I went through this with my Mango Mash.
The best tool I found is a racking cane, wrap a strainer bag or fruit bag around the end and put it inside a collander and siphon off the liquid, it worked like a nut.

Re: After much reading I'm buying a still. A few questions.

1. Alcohol is flammable, but its not like ether and doesn't boil off vapors enough to worry about. It does of course make sense to make sure your not dripping raw product onto an open flame. Be careful, use some sense and you will be fine. 2. There is a LOT to be learned about making cuts. Basically...

If its bubbling or has foam forming on top its working. How well it works depends on a lot of things. One of the things you Really need to do is some reading, you also need a couple tools, like a hygrometer to measure the starting gravity and then final gravity Those numbers are used to calculate wh...

Re: What do y'all think of this?

OK, sounds like you have the process down well enough. The chips or sticks are more efficient because for 1 you can see the color of your product in a glass jar and because of the surface area/volume and you don't have to have enough product to fill the barrel. Other than that, they look quite nice ...

Honestly, I think you would be better served by concentrating on getting your rig together, then pick 1 recipe like Birdwatchers and go with that until you got your legs under you. After a few batches you may then be ready to think about all the other accouterments like those barrels. I think a lot ...

Sour mashing will definitely effect flavor as will any other additions you make along the w...

The vapor coming out of the top and from the take off tube indicate that you do not have enough cooling. Remove the insulation from the condensation section, you want to loose heat there, not keep it in. Is the coil on your condenser tight against the top section? If so, tighten it up some so its of...

Just cranked up a batch of this one this afternoon and it kicked off immediately. Followed the original recipe, about 4" of feed, 2 gallons boiling water, 7lbs sugar. With it running as hard as it is I might get to run this one next weekend.
