Re: Everything you need to know about oak alternatives.

Food for thought… whiskey barrels are only charred on the inside. The entire inside I think. When the flame has the entire inside surface aglow, steam is used to quench the coals. That produces activated carbon, not regular charring. So, if this is true…? The liquid inside the barrel never gets to t...

Hi Rad. I want to put an all bran in the carbouy. The grocery just happend to be running a sale on sugar and cerial this week. I don't really feel like browsing 99 pages to find the current best/favorite version. Is it still the original? Would you re-post if its changed? My last all bran was just a...

Re: slow then stalled sugar wash

Thanks for your responses. Myles I like your idea. I am really just after a recipe that allows me to take a day to prepare a wash and be able to walk away from it until it’s time to distill. I thought I had it until I checked the SG. The modified birdwatchers I’ve been running are close to that but ...

slow then stalled sugar wash

I have been making a slightly modified tomato wash for quite some time using the ingrediants i could find in my area. It has been working quite well for me. I did not have a hydrometer yet. The basics were a birdwachers with one a day vitamins, B vitamin pills, a pinch of epsom salt and 16-16-16 fer...

Re: Hobby Distillers Busted in VA

Is it possable that the American civilians will ever truly have controll over the public sector again? I doubt it. The government and a high percentage of the people have it in their minds that the geral poulation needs to be herded every step of the way. The country with the most laws and the most ...

Since Dec. of 2006 people have been going on about plastic or not to plastic on this thread. If you read the entire thread I think you will come to the same conclusion as me: "Don't use plastic or don't tell us about it if you do." I could tell you all about a ferment recipe that makes 25%...

Re: thumper vs. reflux

I recomend you just build a keg-bioler with a tri-clamp. You could use a poney keg but I see you are not realy tying to keep it small. If you start with a simple pot still and a side arm type condenser like a worm in a bucket of ice water, you will save a lot of money in the long run. That's because...

Love it! Still gets better and better.

I can't remember if its called a baffle or not but I'm thinking about the pice of metel thats all bent up, going up the pipe in a water heater. I know it realy helps deflect the heat into the side of the pipe as it goes up.

To add on to the previous: If we ever want to get this legalised, It would be a good idea to get rid of bad publicity. If big brother can use them types to keep a hold on what they want, they will.

My grandma always kept her bulk yeast in the freezer. she would buy it from the co-op and put it into mason jars rite away. That was in the dessert. Low humidity makes a huge differance on things that are real cold. Now I'm in the tropics. The humidity will wet my yeast alot before it's done defrost...

Hi world! This is my first post!

Like so many others, I have been reading through this beautiful treasure trove for quite a while. I'm not at the level I would be content at yet, but ...
