Get ready for round 2...

Looks like another TV show about home distillation may be in the works. This one looks to be a little more legit than that silly "Moonshiners" series on Discovery. I stopped watching that show when one of the boys uncapped his still mid-run to add more sugar to the wash, explaining that mo...

I never did try this one. I think maybe I was getting a little ahead of myself with recipe ideas before getting my technique down solid first.

All Bran question

I picked up supplies from a different grocery store this week, and my inattention my have screwed up my wash. I have been making 4 gallon ferments of Rad's All-Bran recipe, and have been very pleased with the result. Usually, I pick up 2 8 pound bags of sugar and convert them before fermentation. Ho...

If you're really worried about getting busted, but really want to keep detailed records, you might want to try the ironkey. I have a friend who works for the local sheriff office's computer task force, and these ironkey flash drives are the only thing he says he hasn't been able to crack. Kind of pr...

Re: Larry the Cable Guy does Moonshine...

I was watching it in bed the other night while the wife was trying to sleep. I had it up a little too loud and woke her up. Apparently waking up to Larry the Cable Guy's voice isn't the most pleasant thing in the world, as she didn't seem overly happy with me. I wasn't the least bit impressed with t...

My other hobby

In addition to recently taking up distilling, I also enjoy exploring the deserts of Nevada and California by ATV, and exploring old mines and mining camps. There's just something about an old tunnel that's been sitting abandoned for 100+ years that has always interested me. Thought I'd toss up a cou...

How does that compare to a Romeo & Juliet Maduro...(one of my favorites!) or a Camacho Triple Maduro (my newest favorite)? I'm ALWAYS dow for a cigar tip (though I only get to smoke them a few times a year, but when I do I go for top quality) I've never heard of the Camacho, and I have yet to s...

First UJSSM- things learned (pot still)

I ran off my first ferment of UJSSM this week, and learned quite a bit. The flavor of the first gen distillate is pretty decent, so I can't wait to see how this improves with future generations! I went ahead and saved one pint of hearts, and plan on throwing the rest back in the boiler, and doing a ...

Re: Can you have too many buckets?

I've been looking around on craigslist, hoping to come across some glass carboys that need a good home. I DID find a guy with 500+ food grade 6 gallon buckets. They were originally used to hold pickles, and I was wondering how easy it would be to get rid of the pickle odor, but for the price, it was...

Yes, with a pot still the tomato will carry over into your spirits... If you want the spirits to be more neutral you will need to dilute and re-distill at least one more time... Thanks, rad. I'm not overly concerned with it at this point, as it was just a cleaning run. It's nice to know my nose is ...

Birdwatchers cleaning run complete, a few Q's.

I had a 5.5 gallon batch of birdwatchers that finally hit a SG of below 1.000 yesterday, so I sat it outside for the night to let it clear a little, and racked it to the still this afternoon for my first ethanol cleaning run. I had previously completed 2 50/50 vinegar/water cleaning runs. I did not ...

Re: Heating your fermenting vessel

Well the aquarium heaters certainly seem to have done their job! I checked the birdwatchers this afternoon and it was just below 1.000, so I racked it over into another bucket, popped the lid and airlock on, and left it alone for an hour. Came back, and was getting one bubble every two minutes or so...

Heating your fermenting vessel

I have a batch of Birdwatchers, as well as my first all bran wash fermenting in my bathtub as I type this. It's a little cool in the house right now, leading to some slow ferments. The birdwatchers is currently on day 12, and still bubbling 8-10 times per minute, the all bran is on day 2 and still r...

It seems that the infamous Four Loko and several other alcoholic energy drinks are going to be tossed into a commercial still after being pulled from store shelves, and turned into auto fuel. Re: Sankey Keg disassembly

I went and grabbed the biggest wrench I had in the garage, wedged the lip of the wrench under the inside of the keg lip, and used it the press down on the valve. For me, it was much easier than trying to jam a screwdriver in there long enough to relieve the pressure. Also, if you tip the keg on it's...
