Re: whats your music

Earlier I was listening to Jellyroll Morton on a 70's underground 33 1/3 release from Japan.

Right now I'm listening to Pinetop Perkins on an original 78.

Yep, it's oily, and it's probably why it has such a soft mouth-feel.

I'm definitely gonna leave it white, tannins would ruin it.

Agave Mexicana

A Navaho friend of mine helped me find/dig/and clean up the penas from several agave Mexicana's. They aren't as big as the commercially grown azuls. I baked 'em in a pit like a pig at a luau. I ground 'em and fermented 'em with wine yeast. A 20 gallon ferment after draining off the liquid and pressi...

Re: Water cooling question-

I use a coil in a bucket/barrel with my potstills.

If the bucket/barrel is equal in size to yer boiler (or larger) no running water is needed. As an added benefit, you end up with a bunch of warm/hot water after yer run to clean up with!

Exactly.

A necked down fitting will only increase vapor speed.

The whole concept of waiting till something bad happens, and then grabbing yer rifle and "bug-out-bag" is an epic fail from the start. Once the power goes out, it's already too late. The moment the power goes out you better already be where ya need to be. If the power stays off for a year ...

I don't get pulled over but once or twice a year. It only happens when a cop is bored: I drive using cruise controll and set it for 2 MPH over whatever the speed limit is. When I get pulled over I listen politely, follow directions, and as soon as possible mention I'm tired and I'd really like to ge...

Re: outdoor Temperature

It doesn't matter what yer distilling, or what type of still you are using... the only difference between summer stilling and winter stilling is your personal comfort, and how much heat you have to use.

Insulation (for you and yer still) makes winter stilling easy and nice.

Re: drum-heater...

The original question was if the drum belt was ok for heating a fermentation.

My answer was: insulation was all needed.

If the ferment is warm enough by itself why would ya use insulation?

I don't know what yer getting at... are ya just arguing for argument's sake?

No sir.

I just use insulation when it is cold and I need to keep the fermenter warm. In the summer it would make the ferment too hot making the "heart" cut too small and the distillate a bit "whiff".

Well, I wouldn't say it is that simple... Actually it is. I live at roughly 8k feet in the Rocky Mntns. It gets COLD here. Fermenting in a 13 gallon fermenter in an unheated storage building was giving me slow ferments in the winter with negative 20-30 overnight. So I made a fermenter blanket outta...

Re: drum-heater...

Fermentation creates heat.

If ya need to keep a fermenter warm all ya need is insulation.

The pros are fermenting batches that are so large that they need to provide cooling to their fermenters.
