Re: Broken thumper Jar
I wasn't sure if I liked my thumper or not at first, but after tasting the product after it has been on oak for 3 months I'm very happy with it and will continue to use it. I'm going to make a small one for my stove top unit as well, but it will be an in line one instead of the one like I made for m...

Re: Where'd your name come from??
I'm a welder by trade for over 20 years now and that's just a number for a common mild steel tig welding rod. Welding wll always be my first passion, really gets into your blood, much like distilling I would imagine.

Re: New Thumper On Top of Boiler
Tuesday April 7 2009 I had a chance to really try out the thumper last night. I have run a couple small cleaning runs through it but this was the first big wash, here are the results. 43L of rum wash into boiler "Gingerbreadman's Fancy Molasses Recipe" 1stripping run from a 20L wash of &qu...

Nice looking set up, I like the tapered lyne arms. Reading about your thumper and it's performance helped give me the shove to build mine, great job.

I think that should do it for pic size, I'll keep that in mind for the future.

Re: New Thumper On Top of Boiler
I'll try to reduce the pics or at the very least I'll remove them until I can put something smaller in, not so good with computers. Evil, yours is much more practical, I have a welding shop so I can make things like this with left overs from previous jobs, the cost would be too high for most to have...

Re: New Thumper On Top of Boiler
I was concerned about stability as well, I made it smaller in diameter and even with the thumper full and the boiler empty it's quite stable. These pics were taken of the first run, I filled the boiler through the same fitting that the thumper attaches to (2" pipe thread), since then I have add...

New Thumper On Top of Boiler
I had half a sheet of 16 gauge SS in the shop so I made up a thumper, I decided to mount my thumper on top of my boiler rather then beside it. I thought about this after reading one of Goose Eye’s posts about how they used to light a fire underneath the doubler to help get things going, I thought th...

Re: Thumper setup
Sorry for the long post on your thread Evil, it is a nice set up you have there though, glad to see it's working well for you. Hack, Thanks, I'll try that. I did notice that it would still work until I filled the last 2" or so and then it was becoming difficult for it to push the vapour through...

Re: Thumper setup
Nice looking set up there Evil. I have a question, when doing just the water or clean out run did you try filling the thumper all the way to the top to see how it ran? I'm curious for my own design as to how much of a difference this makes. I'm thinking the more liquid in the thumper the more pressu...

Re: Thumper or Not
I thought about a pony keg, but I have 3 big kegs just sitting there and I'll use one half for myself and the other for my brother. I was thinking the flat bottom might be nicer for the thumper as well and I have half a sheet of 316ss I can use for the bottoms. May as well use what I already have. E...

Re: Thumper or Not
Thanks Hack and Truthskr, I think I may work on building one of those self filling ones like you have there Hack, great id ea. I think i'll cut a keg in half and weld a flat plate across the bottom to make the thumper. Looks like it takes a bit of practice to get good at running it, thanks for the i...

Thumper or Not
I've noticed in the past little while a lot more people are speaking about building a thumper or are using one. I must admit I'm getting caught up in this and thinking about building one, probably more for the fact that I enjoy working with metal and building things. For the most part I run a 20L po...

Re: What to do(found a BIG liebig)
I'd get a piece of 3/8" or 1/2" wooden dowel and cut it 4' long. Put a notch in the end to wedge a piece of stainless steel wool into or tape a hunk of stainless steel wool to the end of it it. Then put the dowel into your drill and go at it from both ends of the pipe. That's how we polish...

Re: New Keg Made for my Brother
Yes, the copper is welded to the stainless with tig. I use a 316ss filler wire and it welds fine for this type of application (no pressure). Just be sure to purge the inside with argon and concentrate your heat on the copper when welding. If you're an experienced tig welder you will see that it weld...

New Keg Made for my Brother
I haven't been on much lately with work but have been happily pursuing making alcohol and things are going well. I made a keg set up for my brother and will make another for myself this fall. I'll attach some pics and short description. I made it so that I can leave it set up on the burner. The cond...

Re: Barrel Mill Infusion Spirals
Hey Pinto i picked up some of these spirals from the barrel mill and they're great. If you tell them that you are using them for spirits they will send charred ones. I just tried them in a 6th generation batch of UJSM. I put one of the small spirals in a 3 liter jug at 65%, in four days it had a nic...

I picked up a bag of malted rye to try this recipe out. If I'm understanding correctly you didn't ferment it with the rye in the wash, is this correct? Is there any advantages (flavour) to leaving the rye in the wash while fermenting? If I'm reading correctly you found it easier to seperate before f...

Is 62.50 too much for a 25 kg bag of malted rye?

Why do fruit flies like Moonshine?
I know this is an odd question but my buddy and I both noticed independently that fruit flis are attracted to home made moonshine rather then store bought booze, anyone else notice this? When drinking around the camp fire the fruit flies seem to flock to shine and don't bother with the store bought ...
