Re: Why is the strength of the spirit I collect so low?
Hi Calica, I make rum with a pot still and use Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash from Tried and True section. It is by far the best sugar wash I've found. It utilizes a 'yeast bomb' and all the nutrients needed to produce a finished wash every time. I modified it a bit using cane sugar and molasses but alw...

Spirit or not to spirit?
I have been making rum with my pot still (photo) and producing some very fine rum with lots of flavor from a modified Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash, I love his recipe. I use raw cane sugar and molasses, starts at 1.080 and ends at .980 in 10 days, witch produces just under 1 US gallon at 50 to 55% from...

Yes, yes, Husker, Wineo has a winner. I have my third wash going in as many weeks. His recipe is simple, clean, and predicable. I have been too busy to get my notes together and as soon as I do will post more details. Wineo, thanks for everything, your recipe is now at the top of my list. :D :D :D :...

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash
Thanks for your replies, far be it from me to question the guys who know. But I am still in a quandary about the info from the parent site about “measuring alcohol content of the wash” This is a quote from parent site – fermenting section: Alcohol Content of the Wash You can easily calculate the str...

Re: Wineos Plain Ol Sugar Wash
Hello Wineo, just wanted to tell you I tried your sugar wash recipe from previous posts, started it 11 days ago. I followed it to the letter with the following exceptions: -I used 8 large size red potatoes (the wife wanted to use the cooked ones for Italian potatoes salad, and yes it was delicious) ...

Thanks phanmo for the report, I will try the chokes and run it through my reflux column. Sent the Mrs out to buy some at the local international market but they haven’t come in yet in my area. BTW your rig looks great and it works…..’simple is as simple does’. I am a tinker and a builder, enjoy the ...

Hi FM, rum and tequila are my spirits of choice. I have a 2 acre plot of land also (Old_Blue) just sitting there wanting for something to be planted. I started some sugar cane this winter and just put it in the ground. The sunchokes sound like a good companion for the cane. I have lots of su...

Froggy, punkin, Dnderhead…ya, we call them prawns here also and there are better ways to cook them, I couldn’t resist the “shrimp on the Barbee” thing. :D Looks like I did OK on my still build and results, no one told me to go back and read, rear, read.   Just started my second wash ...

Hi alice, I do use a submersible pump to get water out of my pool to cool the worm coil. It comes in at the bottom of the 5 gal bucket and exits at he the top and returns to the pool by gravity. I was worried about chlorine on copper but in my pool heating system water is pumped into the heater in c...

PUGIDOGS, Pikluk – Thanks for the ideas, I do use a carboy fermentor, both of your suggestions would be a better way to control temp, from the inside, than fiddling with voltage control on the outside. Looks like a trip to the aquarium store. Thanks for the picture ( it’s worth a thousand words) I w...

barrelcreator, I'm sorry I confused you, the second coil was probably an over kill. With the second coil no scrubbers are necessary. As for the still, it takes some getting use too, but boy does it work great.  P.S. Without the second coil I still used the scrubber even thought I saw very...

I built the exact still you did, moonshine-still.com/ and my first water run did the same thing. PUGIDOGS and junkyard dawg is exactly right, I put a copper scrubber in the top of the condenser and all is well. As-Ol-Jo, You probably can't run enough cooling water to condense all the vapor from boil...

PUGIDOGS, The aquarium heater sounds like a good idea also, but I am so goosey about letting air into the wash and keeping everything clean, how do you fiddle with the adjustments without handling the heater? Hi frikz, I did read that a lot of you use some kind of insulation witch would work in a stable ambient temperature. As I noted the wife LET me set up the fermenter in the house but next time it’s going to be out in the cold :( so I figured I would find a way to control the temp. I think with the in...
