Re: is watering down a exotermic reaction?

The soap residue may be the cause of your cloudy spirits... well maybe, also I use to wash out the soap with a brush and plenty of water and then steam out the still before start collecting and then anyway there are running about 2 1/2 liters of forshots and heads before I start to collect in a spi...

is watering down a exothermic reaction?

well this is a old story for me and am I'm little embarrassed about it, but I have to dig it up again: I still cant distill complete transparent spirit... So here I go over it again: - I do UJSM in a food grade plastic barrel as fermenting container, fermentation gos fine, I don't see any problem wi...

Re: what to do with scorched whiskey?

I'll poor it first into my trucks gas tank! jajaja well it was mashed corn flower, and fermented on the corn. The clear overstanding was about only 1/3 of total the volume and the lower 2/3 were quite thick , so I made a striping run on the mash with the spent corn... for UJSM you should not run on ...

Re: How to clear a cloudy spirit

I imagine there has to be something in the spirit that turn cloudy when adding water... might the spirit has been contaminated after dripping from the still? any plastic ore such? any other new device you used?

I got a 30 liter batch that is contaminates with scortched batch form the first run (80% corn, 20 malt wash).. I thought the scorchy taste would clean out with the second run but it dint.. it does NOT taste nice, not even to serve the the brothers in law... the only thing I can imagine right now is ...

Re: Newbe Question

Also decide what you want to produce.. . if you go for flavored stuff (whiskey, rum) the simplest pot still is already top end... if you want to go for neutral it'll be a column .. but remember if you have a pot sill, you still can make neutral alcohol, maybe not 97.5% ABV , but flavorless... just t...

exactly as Dunderhead says... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hominy I got the impression I save boiling time and so gas.... if it is necessary to lower the pH of the hominy would be object of experiments, the water I use is pH 6, I measured pH around 7 before tossing malt and this might be a little hig...

After experimenting and following the thread I think I got my recept for the moment and made some major changes to the normal process. Re: 1st time mash complet fail...

I did the striping run on 70 liter and got out 12 liters @ 32% ABV. that makes up for a initial alcohol of 5.4% of the fermented mash... half of what I expected... but I can get a lot better in the future.... one question I could still not find a answer: is there a upper limit for the water /grain r...

ok boys, also this thread got hitchhiked for other stuff here's the update...

Ok...I'll stay confident as punkin says... I separated the liquid from all the spent corn and tossed yeast.. it bubbles now... I washed the spent corn and used the water for the next batch like Dunderhead suggested.. I'll see what is coming out.. maybe its just my expectation were off reality...

ok.. I'll drain, filter, squeeze off the liquid and pitch the yeast.... but it makes me anyway wounder, 'caus the liquid on top of the solid material is just nothing... most of the bucket is like a porridge.... not at all what I expected it should look like... to Dunderhead: I agree of the hassle of...

Re: 1st time mash complet fail...

If you think it's a bust....save the strained off liquid and use it to start your next batch. ... thats exactly what I feel, as the clear liquid on the top is not sweet... unfortunately I'v got no hydrometer... I'v got the other half of the malted corn and barley on hand, but I don't want to try ag...

well the title says all.. Here what I have done:I malted 15 kg corn in batches of 5 kg following instructions on the site. The roots were about 1 inch when I dried the malted corn. It had a slight sweet taste and a sweetish smell, definitely different as the unmalted corn. I stored it in a air tight...

I took about 1250 oranges, I'v got a orange I could have pressed 20'000 oranges.. . I'll take off the oil, actual it has not much taste, it is not orange essence.. like Dunder says... what still makes my mind wander is the fact that the spirit dripped right from the first drop milky, and I imagine i...

Orange wash on striping run observations

I pressed with a aluminum press 100 liters of orange juice, added 16 kg sugar and tossed 10 packages of EC1118. It took about a week to start bubble, (out side temp was 17 - 19 deg C), but then it turned to a permanent bubble through one of these S shaped plastic air locks I got from a wine making s...

Thanks guys

that is a pretty clear voting for wash in the spirit run. Unfortunately y distilled all the wash yesterday, not much left to water down today.. I'll see what I can do, maybe ther's a little left over that I can siphon off from the UJSM

backset in spirit run

I read on the home site about watering down for the spirit run with back set... I imagine to increase aroma... and I like that idea...If I remember right its in the section Preparing Wash > Grains > Moonshine.

Any comments on that? Ore any reason to no do so?

The drinking water of my home is naturally carbonized and eats up copper tubing in less then 10 years, it's spring water coming from volcanic grounds, but it is perfectly clean and has a perfect tast as drinking water. No chemicals are used to treat it. I don't have any chemical analyses of it I use...
