I wouldn't use corn meal. It will gunk up everything. Cracked corn is the way to go.

To filter or not to filter that is the question...whether tis nobler in the hearts and minds of men ...There's alot of disagreement in the discussion of filtering or not filtering... First after a spirit run definately not. Filtering should only be done after cuts are made. In my opinion filtering i...

All this rubber is a WAY BIGGER PROBLEM than how long the aluminum may last in contact with an acidic wash. The rubber will cloud yer hooch and add a nasty smell and taste, which is a minor problem compaired to the Chems that will get leached into the hooch, and then consumed by you and anyone else...

I used an aquarium pump with an air stone for about 24 hours. Lack of oxygen was definitely not the problem. It'll work fine of course, but I think it a bit of over-kill. When I was doing 5 gallon batches , I aerated about 15 minutes. Now that I'm doing 50 gallon batches I aerate about 2 hours. I s...

Any source of starch will work, but you'll need a source of enzymes to mash in order to convert the starches into sugar.

And temperature. A yeast that is used above it's prefered temperature will produce more nasties. Very well done I-GORI-GOR wrote:

5 gallons isn't really a very big run. I suspect that you are correct in your belief that you still have flux residue. On my first alc cleaning run I ran about 15 gallons of wash . With only 5 gallons the water, vinegar, and alc cleaning runs probably weren't very effective. However, Dndr is correct...

Re: soda keg boiler
I think you'd be happier with a 15 gallon keg than with a 5 gallon corny. 5 gallons is fairly small sized for a run, the wide opening would be alot of work to convert and with a column like the bokakob the narrow base will make the configuration very unstable and prone to tipping over.in addition, t...

You must have a pretty quick use rate? Dooes such a large batch still protect itself well from those nasty invaders? No, the point of all that volume is to save waiting on a ferment. I've always got something to run and never have to wait. I think to be in the safe side I would actually make a 5 ga...

Try McMaster. A good stainless needle valve will run about $80 US. I'd suggest a flow control needle valve.

I'm fermenting 50 gallon batches in a 55 gal barrel all the time now. Heat isn't an issue. Heating problems only become a problem in really large batches- 200 gallons and up. Then, cooling coils should be considered. I really don't consider these are big batches. I had been ferment 6-8 5 gallons bat...

You can use just about any nitrogen source. DAp is about the best. However, you can use Miracle Grow, 10-10-10, urea etc. And yes tomato paste works well also, but can introduce flavours that you need removal.

So many people say that a good reflux column will clean up most everything - but frankly, if you're starting with something that has a strong flavor - it's going to stay. I don't believe that statement for a minute. I've tipped some nasty gunk into the skanky hoe, including 4l of peach brandy that ...

For a DAP substitute you can use just about anything with nitrogen: DAP, Urea, Miracle Grow , 10-10-10- fetilizer, usually on a 1 to 1 ratio. If it has nitrogen it will work. Some better thatn others. Epsom Salts are fairly available. You should have few problems finding that at any pharmacy. If you...

I'm not sure if the wash can actually get too acidic (if you have more info on this send it my way, i'd like to learn). Either way, you should be able to infinitely return backset as long as the pH is okay, (better: optimal) and you could adjust with some base or a buffered base to get the pH back ...

Nutrients . You doubled up on the nutrients . Follow the recipe. Excess nutrients are poisonous for the yeast. i'm not a fan of the pre-packaged nutrients either. You never know quite whats in them. For a 5 gallon batch 1 tsp nitrogen( DAP, Miracle Grow, Urea, even a 10-10-10 fertilizer); ~ 1 tsp ci...
