Re: Baileys Irish Cream Recipe
This recipe, with slight variation, (no egg) abounds on the internet. I've just made it with a double shot of espresso instead of instant coffee and it's not bad. I'll only use a single shot next time. There are loads of Youtubers telling us that their recipe is better than the real thing, and it is...

Can MAP (mono) be substituted for DAP (di)? I believe it is used mainly for nitrogen so having half the phosphate shouldn't matter.

Re: What'd ya'll make today?
I started it. Still, it would be great to know if you've made any significant alterations or discoveries if you've been doing it regularly. I finished mine off a couple of years ago and wasn't producing for a while. I'm about to go down that path again as I now have enough of everything else and I a...

Re: Kettle souring with Lactobacilius
I have a healthy lacto flower growing on the surface of some leftover sugar over used grain. When I last emptied my fermenter I didn't remove the grain as I intended on putting another sugar wash over it with some fresh corn and micronised barley. I covered the grain back over with a bit of water an...

A while ago I researched and made ouzo that turned out great. Louched properly at below 40% and tasted brilliant. It was bit more work than you describe but we'll worth the effort. There is a thread on it here somewhere and I've bookmarked it as I intend on making another batch soon. It ends up bein...

Re: Do I throw out all of the first spirit run?
Been using pickled brass unions for years without issue. We can't buy copper ones over this side of the pond. Once the copper tube is pushed in from both sides there is very little brass surface area remaining exposed in the vapour / product path. I also use 2" brass equestrian harness / scuba ...

Re: Let's talk Foreshots
If your running a pot still only, you'll have by-product. Keep the good gear and do whatever with the rest. If you have a reflux as well, you can salvage something. I keep 50 ml out, then another 100 ml, then make a cut after 16.666'% of the total ABV is out, then taste it all and make more cuts bas...

Re: My first UJSSM
I just follow the instructions on page 1 of the original thread. The only problem I've ever had is with pH. All you gotta do is reduce backset and / or add some Calcium Carbonate, ie; egg shell, shell grit, oyster shell or whatever other form you wish to find it. The only other thing I found is that...

Re: All Grain Variations
I have a question for you Vintage (or anybody else who knows the answer). Approximately how many times can you run a sugar wash over spent grains before it becomes exhausted of any flavour or body value? UJSSM is apparently perpetual by replenishing a portion of spent grain throughout the process fr...

Re: Soldered joints and acid
Why did you soak it in vinegar? I have never soaked a soldered joint in acid, be it vinegar, citric acid or anything else. Step 1 Mechanically clean the joining copper surfaces back to new metal. Step 2 Apply flux. Step 3 Assemble the joint. Step 4 Apply heat and solder. Step 5 Allow to cool and sol...

Probably leave it be. Ferment requires oxygen at the start but then leave it alone. If the yeast has what it needs it will do its thing without you doing anything.

They were possibly telling you to boil it thinking you were going to make beer (as in ale or lager). Boiling is a required step in the process unless you are using a kit where it has already been done for you.
