Re: New to distilling
There's a good chance the shape of your condenser is the problem. You need something to block out the center and push the vapor into contact with a cold surface. Perhaps a coldfinger return or a double wound coil. As it sits now there's a good chance the open center of the coil is acting like a chim...

Re: I just don't understand 'setback'
You're close. 1. Ferment to dry & distill the entire wash, except the lees. (That's yeast, corn and sludge in the bottom). 2. Cover the lees with water to keep it alive and safe until you're done running. You don't need to add more yeast unless something has gone wrong. 3. Once you're done runni...

Re: Honey
Honey will last indefinitely. It crystalizes as it gets old, but gentle heating will liquify it again. Not sure exactly what you'd call a spirit distilled from honey. Some call it honey brandy. Gotmead.com has lots of info on making mead (honey wine) which you might find useful. You can cut some cor...

I use a jigsaw with bi-metal blades. I've cut a stock pot, several kegs, and an 1/8" thick aluminum project box for electronics. Works great, but the keg was hell on the ears.

I use PTFE gaskets from St Patrick's of Texas. They have a silicone version that's tri-clamp x sanke. Wish they had that in PTFE, too.

Re: Stopping & Restarting Dstillation
Yes, sir. If you're refluxing you may find that you need another heads cut after equalizing. That will depend on the efficiency of your still and your technique, but you'll probably have to do it. So keep the first bit separate until you know.

Temp is a function of the percentage of alcohol to water in the boiler. It slowly changes over the course of a run.

Re: sugar wash why not just sugar/water/yeast?
Run yourself a batch of this John Stone fellow's recipe Seems pretty dismissive. John Stone is a Ph.D. in chemistry, and he's authored 3 books on the subject of distillation and alcohol production. He probably knows a bit about what he writes. To ferment 10 kg of sugar use 450 grams (1 lb) of the m...

Re: VM problems
EF, what can you configure your rig to push all the vapor out the product condenser? Maybe pull the reflux condenser and cap off the column. Measure output like that, reassemble, and measure again to experimentally verify the r/r. That won't explain the why of it, but maybe you'll find out that some...

Re: Opinons on Extreme Column Length
I use Amphora structured mesh and have observed considerable compression. It's a 2" diameter, 36" column stuffed with 1 lb. When it was initially packed it filled the entire column. After about 1 year it had settled 4" total. Snuffy has been doing some research with a glass column in ...

Re: Opinons on Extreme Column Length
As far as data for still design is concerned, there's not much to be gained by making a taller column and then lowering the HETP by using inefficient packing. Like AE said, that valve gets high fast, as wellas seeing the therm... Also consider that if you build something much different it's hard for...

I use a jigsaw with bimetal blades. Cut a 10" hole in the top of the first keg boiler, as well as 2, 1.5" holes for elements. Also cut many holes in 1/8" aluminum. Only took 2 blades for all that. You'll need some oil, too.

Yeah. That's the way. 2 batches If you top up with water you'll be diluting the mash too much. You'll be making it so thin as to be worthless.Buzzard wrote:can I do two batches for 50 gallons or would you just cook one batch and fill the fermenter the rest of the way with water?

That "proper column" bit wasn't meant as a shot at your still. I wasn't really paying attention and have never run one, so couldn't comment on that. It was a reference to height and the presence of copper.

What kind of yeast did you use? Some kinds of yeast will make a sulfur smell, too.
Didn't answer your original question, did I? You can redistill most anything into neutral with a proper column. As for turning rum into vodka with a pot...Not sure. Never tried vodka in a pot still.

Re: Terrible rum attempt - save for neutral or discard?
Lots of times molasses is treated with sulfur as a preservative. Copper neutralizes sulfur compounds on contact. You should redistill with a couple copper scrubbers in the path. Might fix you right up. And next time try to get unsulfured molasses, if that is indeed what you used. Happy stillin' -Mud
