Re: Hello all - pleased to be here

Hi bct! Read up on tried and true recipes and making cuts. And don't get scared off from the lack of sanity.... or sanitizing. Us beer brewers are used to keeping things clean. The hooligans around here sometimes take a different approach. It was one of the more notable adjustments I learned when I ...

Re: Pot still w/ reflux - is it worth doing?

Steve, I've done this with my pot still. It helps if you put some copper mesh inside the condenser tube for more vapor contact. Pull heads real slow after you tip it back down. It compacts your heads a little better so you lose a little less total volume to your heads cut. Like NZChris said, you can...

Re: rifles

Picked up this 1956 Husqvarna Vapenfabriks .243 Model 1600 for free at the beginning of the year. "Wouldn't shoot flat." Messed with it for a few months, got the stock bedding correct, removed some material where the foregrip was touching the barrel. Replaced the scope mount with a Leupold...

Re: Grain straining bags ripping.

I sew my own bags out of undyed lycra (spandex) with cotton thread. Learned the method from another forum member years ago. I make them to fit a 50 gallon barrel. They can easily hold 250 lbs of wet grain. Hoist them up with a block and tackle and let the grain squeeze itself. You do get a bit of bi...

No, I have too many rigs to justify building another just yet. Once I get my hands on the perfect boiler, I do plan on building a 6" column, however.

What's your favorite heating element?

Hey all, I know this is a bit of a weird thing to get excited about, but I just tried out a new heating element and I'm quite impressed. I use a 220v 5500w element to run my boiler and I've used probably a dozen different elements over the years. Once they start to get ugly, I usually retire them, s...

Poitin, I can't believe you still have that! Excellent! Bayou, the boudin was phenomenal, I love it. Also, your amaretto is the only thing I've ever added to nitro cold brew coffee that has made it better. I don't use cream or sugar, but I'd be happy to pour a shot of that amaretto in every cup I dr...

I have anejo tequila and barrel strength rum that will both be at 63%, I'll be sure to do extreme labeling. And bring water for proofing. Sorry dresden, the only bottle of the maple left is in Shine's possession. He gets to decide if and when it ever gets cracked. After the last disaster I had (2 30...

Should be leaving my place with Rager around noon or 1:00 on friday. I think we're about 4 hours away. I'm gonna bring a small keg of nitro cold brew coffee I made, hoping for some feedback. And anything else good I can rustle up between now and then.

Sorry for the late reply!

Re: HERMS Corn Mash? Yes! You can!

Johnny, you are inspiring me. Lautering with corn is something I've always wanted to pull off. I think I might give it another go. How much do you mill your corn? Or do you just cook it cracked?

It will be a little while before I give this a go again, but I'll post my results if I have any luck.

Re: Maple Syrup Rum

I love the label! ShineOn, if you ever try it, make sure you keep things clean. The last batch I made got completely ruined, both 30 gallon fermenters. They had loose lids (I use them for bourbon... with a low Ph, it's no problem) and fruit flies got in. Got 60 gallons of vinegar. It was a heartbrea...

Hey Gundog, I know it's been a few weeks, but better late than never... If the mash tasted acidic, it very likely was. That right there could easily be the reason you stalled at 1.030. What yeast are you using? US-05 can handle some serious acidity, I recommend that yeast. Check your Ph if you are a...

First time I've ever eaten raw corn that tasted like it was cooked. Thanks for that, SCD! Was it really as great as I remember, or were we all just completely shitfaced?

The Baby Bourbon is nice, but it doesn't hold a match to their "4 Grain". That stuff is excellent, but it's about $60 for a 375ml. That's steep!
