Re: missing members

I am one of those members who had life take a left turn on them and stopped coming to the forum. I do miss the good people here and the independent thinkers I met. It was a great learning experience which is what I enjoyed the most. Hope things are going well for all.

See ya soon

Hey all. Haven't been around in a bit. Tomorrow I go under the knife for issues related to mouth cancer. I've really enjoyed this hobby and the learning and building but it is not in my cards for the future. I might be back to visit and sell some equipment. I know I've met some good people here...ke...

Re: My Carboy Broke!

Sounds like yours would have broken no matter what, but if you continue to use carboys, try putting them in a milk crate and lifting it only by the crate. Those things are dangerous. I do have a couple that are 20+ years old and still going strong though.

Re: My First Still

I seen a Bayou Classic 10psi burner in the 50 dollar range that looked like it would work well. Having built a couple of custom brewing rigs in both propane and natural gas, I would say that 10PSI wouldn't do it for me anymore. Any burner with a Bayou Classic BG10 can be fired up to 30PSI. I got cu...

Re: infection smells a bit like acetone?

Thanks for the input, all. I did run it as part of a larger batch. Not sure if it was the cause but there is a slight solvent taste in the finished product. I am considering tossing it back in the next batch of wash and rerunning it in hopes of cleaning it up. Hey, you win some, you lose some. Next ...

Re: Cheap but decent UAV/drone with HD camera?

I got this one for my youngest. It has 8-9 minute flight time and a camera for around $50. It is a hoot to mess around with. I don't think the camera is HD though. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D3IN11Q/ref=sr_ph?ie=UTF8&qid=1435778931&sr=1&keywords=quad+copter" onclick="window.op...

Re: Boka build opinions please

I had a column that was 41" vertical of packing. It did not do the job. I might get 92-93% which is not bad, using scrubbies. I never tried it with small lava rocks, it might have gotten a few points more. I'd make sure you have the inches to do the job right. If you build it as is and it doesn...

Re: New Dutch Courage Distillery

New Dutch Heritage, very nice Odin. The Dutch have a great heritage and it goes beyond distilling. If I remember right, their adventurous trade journeys to the far east were risky enough that the ship owners pooled their risk, creating a modern version of insurance in the 1500's. Then the Dutch intr...

I know this thread is about using chips but on the whole nuking thing I for one had my eyes opened recently to how even a lower ABV like 40% is very flammable when heated. Be careful folks.

Re: Grits and nixtamalization

You're probably right on the nixtamalization. It's a tough call on food grade because I've made some great stuff from $7.95 feed corn. But these grits are pretty great. I'm mashing up the other 25lbs as we speak. Previously I ordered a bag of white corn from Honeyville...I would stick with yellow, t...

Yeah, if you don't want to add sugar just pitch yeast and start another batch to double it up. I get better results with a finer grind and keeping some low heat on the mash so it stays up around 190 F longer.

I ran the corn grits today. I had about 10 gallons corn grit wash and I threw in a (I think) lacto infected 2 more gallons. Total ABV about 8.5%. You can see there was some dark oil on top of the wash as I was putting it into the boiler. It wasn't nasty or smelly, all of it smelled good. I have been...
