My 1000 oaks was varnished. Would probably look good on the counter or just storage if you clean well. I checked mine this weekend. It's starting to color. But, I think it will be a while before it's drinkable...If it is! I wouldn't waste my time with the cheap ones. I've got a Gibbs 2g I'm waiting ...

I can't be positive. But, several months ago I ordered one from 1000 oaks ( should have read this site before) I could almost swear my keg shipped from the same city as old world barrels. Maybe same company? BTW, I have some brandy in the 1000 oaks keg I distilled from some extra wine I had from las...

Keg Fermenter, any ideas?

I've got a couple of 15 gal kegs. A newer one and an older one. I'd like to try and convert one to a fermenter. The older one I have the top is already cut out and a lid fitted. But, the bottom is the old style that isn't smooth and conical. One idea I have is: To cut the bottom out and weld a SS fu...

Worked great! Cut down on the smell, I'd say by 75%
There's a slight odor in the room I have my fermenters in only.
My wife is much happier!

I'll answer my own question:

Min: 60F (or it will take forever)
Max: 77F ( Yeast can die)

Wow,

I ordered one from 1000 Oaks. I'm from the Napa Valley and I was really un-impressed. They look like something you'd buy from a Tijuana street vendor for the tourists. I let it sit in a TSP mix for 3 weeks then flushed it with citric acid. Then it took 3 weeks of pouring boiling hot water in it ever...

It looks like it is a sugar substitute. Maybe make a mash the same as sugar?

From what I've read from these guys and the distilleries I've visited. A pot still is the best for Whiskies. This will impart some flavors from the grain your mashing. If you go on some of the distilleries websites with pictures. Their still are just huge pot stills.
Good Luck

Corn only sour mash

I've got 3 carboys fermenting corn only (no sugar). After I siphon them off. Should I just add more corn equal to what I took off floating and then backseat and water? With a carboy, it would be real hard trying to recover the yeast at the bottom below the existing grain. Or, should I add more grain...
