Re: Distilling without power or running water
Hey , I know this is a hypothetical discussion , but I’m a bit uneasy about where its going . So far the vibe is heading towards selling , barter and now big batches . ‘Tis a good discussion otherwise . Understood, I knew I was skating on thin ice with this question. That really is simplicity .
I was wondering how you fit the keg without getting wet . Then I saw the valve with no handle .

Re: New column for my T500 boiler
Cool Bananas Reefer I see you running just under 1kw. If that is a 2” column , you could run closer to 2kw no worries. That will get you a higher ABV for the same takeoff rate ….. or a higher takeoff rate for the same ABV as you’re getting now . I bet that coil uses bugger all water EDIT : haggy is ...

Re: Filtering
A better filter can be made by using a Stainless Steel pipe and fitting a needle valve on the bottom . Fill it with activated carbon . Such things are also available off the shelf.
However, with good distilling practices and equipment , filtering shouldn’t be necessary .

Re: Ted's Fast Fermenting Vodka
How much acid is required to shift the pH depends on how much dissolved material is in the water in the first place . Water municipalities normally adjust water pH at the treatment station to pH7 by adding chemicals . How much they add will vary quite a lot throughout the year as the mineral content...

Re: Well well well what do we have here?
It does look like a very capable Mashing controller . It doesn’t have any power controller ability . I couldn't see any specific wiring diagrams for it …. but I may not have been looking hard enough . A quick and easy way to save it might be to keep the SSR and scrap the rest and replace it with an ...

Re: Well well well what do we have here?
I can’t comment on the functionality of it Canuck other than it uses a SSR so presumably it is a Time proportional Power controller similar to the Aurber ones . …. But then again , it may be a home made PID controller with a very ling time period making it totally unsuitable for anything other than ...

There's no need to, the drawings had been around for many decades before I found them and are now available online. It's built out of what was available in the local scrapyard on the day, so posting pics won't be much more help than the original drawings. I have seen one built using two kegs. This ...

Re: White Rum flavour too strong
I kinda agree with Chris . Bacardi do age their White Rum which IIRC comes out of a continuous still at over 90% … sorry I can't remember exact ABV , then it is barrel aged and filtered through something like 15 different charcoals if you want to believe the marketing hype . Having said that , I mak...

Regarding a reflux condenser. While shot guns can work on LM and VMs , they have to be very long and have as many tubes in them as you can possably squeeze , but not smaller than about 1/2” tubes . Best to make a coil if you can . It’s not that difficult . The very first thing I ever made was my RC ...

Ive looked into the ferrule and coupler method of attack but was a bit spooked by soldering the copper coupler to the ss ferrule. Im currently using aquasafe solders (the one sold in rolls) and bakers fluid as flux. The Aquasafe from Bunnings is what I use too . Although I’m using “Duzall” flux atm...

Hey patch . Those ferrules look interesting . They look like a 2” SS ferule that had been TIG welded to a copper coupling . But that’s where I think the issue is . The coupling looks like it’s designed to fit some USA or UK copper pipe ….. not Aussie stuff . …. And that is why you have such a bad as...

Re: Worm condenser without electricity or tap water
If it helps , you need at minimum 2x the volume of water in your Flake stand compared to how much is in your boiler . 3x is better So iff’n you had 10 gal of mash or wash in your boiler , you’ll need about 20gal of water in your worm and flake to get the run done . If you can do that straight up , y...

Re: Scotch in plastic
I can accept on a personal level , that GNS could quite safely be stored and transported in PET and HDPE containers as they have very good Chemical resistance to 95% ABV Ethyl Alcohol . However , I find it questionable if the same resistance applies to all the Congeners and Esters that are present i...

Re: Making cuts guessing game
Ignore the Temperature …..for now . You have 48mm ID , thats close enough to 2” . The trick to running these stills is to adjust the valve to get a certain takeoff rate . In the case of a 2” , it has been found to be no higher than 1l/hr for hearts . Take off any faster and the quality will dramatic...
