S-Cackalacky – Do not worry, I am not discouraged, I am focused. Thanks for the encouragement Bellybuster – I will give that a try. Product quality seems to increase run her slow. I am still not sure how much of the quality increase is related to the wash. Now that I can control her a little bit bet...

Re: First still

Sorry it has taken me a bit to post again. After my first successes with my cleaning and sacrificial runs I was very optimistic about my first real run but I ran into a few issues that I have been working through. I decided to post a follow up with what I have learned to this point. The first proble...

She drives like a dream, still getting used to her personality. I spent a lot of time during the sacrificial run just listening. After a lot of research here this is how I decided to design my Liebig. The distillate was cool and the walls of the Liebig stayed incredibly cool. There is no thermometer...

Well, here she is my first build. All the knowledge and know how to get her to this point came from this site. The picture was taken while I was mocking her up. Cleaning run and sacrificial run were completed today. Had a small leak at the Sanke fitting I found during the cleaning run, corrected and...

I am far from a professional… There are several recipes in the tried and true section that use the trub from one ferment to start another. This is discussed at great length in the UJSM thread and people do it with sweet feed as well. http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=725 Using ...

Re: Why No Hangovers?

That's bloody shocking and insane! Is mine a common experience among home crafting? There are a couple of reasons distilleries do this, but short story long they have to make money. The government forces distilleries to pay tax on every drop they make. They do not care if it fores, heads, hearts, o...

Re: sweetfeed whisky

can i triple this recipe in a 20 gallon drum i have or will it not come out right? If your drum is 20 gallons you will not want to fill it completely to the top. I use a 20 gallon fermenter, I shoot for 15 gallons. Plenty of headspace plus what I rack off (leaving trub and a small amount of ferment...

Re: Agitation

I am not sure you would need to agitate continuously. If you wanted to do that, a slow turning electric motor would be ideal. Speaking about the hobby level of course. I would modify a shelf large enough for the modified fermenter that would look like a wine rack. (Holding the barrel at a 35ish degr...

Re: Agitation

If I was to do this on a small scale I do not think I would tap the container and add paddles from the outside. I would rather turn the whole container. (Like a cement mixer.) I could see a bucket with fins attached to the sidewalls, placed on its side at say a 35 degree angle, and then slowly turned.

Re: Is working mash in the house a good Idea?

The only problem I ever had was a sugar wash I tried that produced a sulfer smell for 2 days. I had to put all of my fermenters in the bathroom with the fart fan running to keep the house from smelling like someone took a poop in the living room. LOL that about made me spit out my drink laughing. R...

They were developed for the production of fuel ethanol. Ethanol plants are not concerned about taste. They want ...

I have been thinking about irregular readings on thermometers in a column. I think one of the contributing factors is the heat of the column walls. The government requires ethanol alcohol to be denatured (basically poisoned) if there is any way it could be obtained and used in a beverage. I don't know how you would obtain pure laboratory grade ethanol that is not denatured and I don't want to know but I would be shocked if it wasn't denatured. ...

Well being new here I am risking offending someone, but I have rarely let let common sense filter my mouth... I always hear it is windy in Oklahoma because Kansas blows and Texas sucks

All in good fun, except the Texas part... hahaha

I have ridden across the Kansas turnpikes often.
