I've had some stuff from StilL 630, but haven't toured the distillery.
Oh hey I didn't realize that Stumpy was only 25 minutes from 630

I hope you get time to stop in on StilL 630 Distillery. They do a really good job over there.

I forgot to ask the Doc about getting pieces of bone for making moonshine.
Nice.
I'm curious to see once you are able to bear full weight how that will affect your hips.

Re: Electronic control of Semi flooded state

At any point during your run is the PID turning off the power to your heat source? Even for a split second? Or does it continuously modulate with no interruption of input what so ever? The thing is that within the context of what we do heat always = pressure. Though pressure doesn't always = heat. A...

Hi Everyone, I have a shotgun condenser that I have purchased from SD a few years ago, my main problem with this condenser is that I. see rust spots at the top opening inside the tubes, I have electopassivate it twice cleaned it with BKF, citric acid and etc but even I see it less but still very sm...

Can't just make a blanket assertion like that. Doing so seems pretty reveling. Practical application in the field says otherwise. Garrison Brother's (among many others) makes a top notch bourbon to be sure. And they are getting their price. They are as they say "killin it". Can cloak an a...

Welcome,
Can give it a quick stir to degas. If it's done, the solids will fall out of suspension very quickly.

I was too beat up to go, but my sales guy did the tour at Rabbit Hole in Louisville.
He was suitably impressed with the facility as well as the quality of oral information.

Might have been goose eye or Dunder Head that recommended a good rule of thumb is 7 turns. 7 is for good luck.

Also, the water bucket looks pretty small. I'd prefer a bucket at least as large as the kettle.

Re: Aged rum to white rum

Yeah I'm curious what J Wray does. I haven't tried hanging onto white rum for more than 6 months or do. Maybe I just need to be more patient. Thanks for the feedback. When I refluxed feints from my all molasses rum, it came out fine, but with something off about it. A twang I guess. Rum remains a m...

Re: Gone to distill some gin at a distillery and shocked by some practices

One of the things that always surprises me is how,,,,,lazy or intimidated some distillery operators are when it comes to basic maintenance on relatively simple assemblies. As if a 4 bolt connection is too complicated to un assemble. Therefore if we just ignore the need to maintain the wear parts hel...

I really would like to know how Wray & Nephew does it. Definitely a requisite for an assortment rum on a proper rum cocktail bar. As with all things rum, I feel the most impactful improvement is that more often than not, it just needs more time. A little distillery up in Gulf Breeze, FL. ages al...

Just got rid of my wife's recently. She just had to have the Rubicon. Then wanted it lifted, 35s, wench, etc. I bet that thing has had every single sensor replaced. Some more than once. The engine light was always on no matter how many times a year it was at the dealer. Too bad really. Good riddance.

Re: Noble Vodkas of Russia XVIII Century

I wonder if this process is related a process others have posted called “Fat Washing”. I know that process was done on finished spirits, but wonder if it’s related? I tried the fat washing once and found it stripped a lot of spirit flavors. It just did not taste right and I was not happy with the r...

Re: Marble magic and a theory yet to be proven

I think that is a totally valid assertion based on my past observations with using a slightly different way to keep excessive heat out of the top half of the apparatus. And then shortly thereafter Minime over on the AD forum more or less confirmed the concept. He simply installed multiple rtd probes...

Re: Marble magic and a theory yet to be proven

Are you saying that the marbles, even though they do not provide the same amount of available surface area compared to twisted, woven metal bits type of random packing, the marbles are better at buffering the middle to top portion of the column against excessive, unwanted, unneeded heat?

I think it's important to differentiate the batch distillation that most hobbyists and small distilleries do, versus continous distillation where methanol-containing wash is continously introduced. With a judicious heads cut during batch distillation, methanol is almost entirely removed. Continous ...

I've never seen a distillation apparatus intended for methanol removal / recovery with only a single column. A...

Think of it kinda like stripping off old paint. First you scrape off the loose bits with your scraper. Then apply some chem based stripping solution and wash off. And finally get the sander out to remove the final bit of pigment down to virgin wood. It is a process that can not effectively be perfor...

That would be misleading.

Yes the methanol is removed at col 3,,,,after all of the requisite scrubbing has done its work of loosening the bond.

Misleading? Ok. This is not a system for the whole process. Look at 60 and 68 at the beginning of the flow process. The feed is azeo and the h2o that is introduced at the top dilutes the azeo back down to initiate the scrubbing process upon start up. Bottoms from col 1 is then introduced at a mid po...
