Re: Gerber

Rad as I was researching sugar inversion, I developed a couple more questions. I saw in some of your posts that you use the 20-20-20, but this would be unnecessary with the Gerber recipe because the Gerber itself is providing the nutrients, right? Also, just from an opinion standpoint, do you prefer...

Re: Gerber

Thanks for the information. The sulfur smell has all but gone away and the wash is bubbling right along and looking great - I will leave it alone. Next time I will add some citric acid during the sugar simmering stage and see how it goes.

Re: Gerber

Ok. I have seen many posts in this thread where people say they do not use the citric acid though. Could I add it in now? Also, another off-topic question. Are the yeast sensitive to all light, or just UV/sunlight?

Re: Gerber

Finished preparing a wash about an hour and a half ago - this is my third time on this recipe, 4th run total. I am noticing a strong sulfur smell coming from the carboy. My recipe was as follows: 5 gallons h2o 18 cups sugar 3.5 cups gerber rice cereal 3 oz. fleischmans yeast 2 pinches epsom salt Boi...

Re: My still

Thanks for the responses. The still was designed after the claw hammer supply 10 gal, but I bought all the parts and pieces and figured it out myself. In hindsight, I kind of wish I had just bought one of theirs because it cost roughly the same in materials and there were some… hang ups.. figuring o...

Re: My still

The column is 1 1/2''copper at about 23'' in height. The condenser is 1/2'' copper with a 1'' jacket. I have an electric single burner stove that did not heat effectively, so I moved it inside to the gas stove. I would like to build a tire rim burner when I can. Because of the cheap electric burner ...

Re: First (successful) run

Yep, you are right. I hadn't even come across those terms somehow. Cool but not cold then? I will read up on appropriate condenser coolant water temp. Thanks.

My still

Had a hard time resizing, but got it into two pics. Please let me know what safety issues you see or improvements I can make. My soldering sucks, I know. I built and then read, so I also know that the boiler thermometer is all but useless. Wondering if I could easily add a vapor thermometer or just ...

Re: Introducing Huckdaddy

Thank you very much for the information. I just did another run last night, didn't blow up or catch on fire and actually got what I think are some drinkable spirits. I will put up a pic of the still and please feel free to critique and advise. Thanks again.

First (successful) run

Thought i'd add my two cents about my first successful run. My list of don'ts for the absolute newbie: DON'T: Start a mash before your still is complete, checked for leaks, and tested with water and vinegar at least a few times (4 for me till I had the still proper) Make a mash out of anything but s...

Re: Introducing Huckdaddy

Thanks for the welcome and the information. Good god there is a lot of information on this. The first run was… not a success to say the least but loaded up another wash already! Again, thank you for the link!
