Re: A little spoon feeding *For New & Novice Distillers
What I nowadays do: 50l barrel w/ plywood top and carbon airlock, 10kg of invert sugar, 500g of tomato paste, 250g of yeast and balance of water, aerated, let to ferment dry which usually takes about a week, and I nowadays let it stand 2 weeks for full clarification, or even longer if the times are ...

Re: Cornflakes whiskey
Apart from the smell and taste profile of the crude distillate I find it quite pleasing on it's own, so I put some wood on it.
How much time should I be looking for? I'd prefer the reference of 100cm2/L of medium toast oak as I did previously as a starting point.

Re: Glass Marbles for Reflux Column Structured Packing
I ended up using raschig rings that I was about to utilize in the first place many years ago and I find they perform better than SS wool packing, which was good on it's own. The still has no problem reaching azeotrope in no time and the collection rate is a bit higher than with SS wool. And I manage...

Re: Cornflakes whiskey
Has anyone ever single distilled, aka stripped only this recipe? I have one set that I stripped only, taking off fair margin of foreshots and then ending the distillation when tails turned nasty, and have had it lying since. It was distilled using 100cm high boka with zero reflux other than what it ...

Mine also float, but some of them have already gone to the bottom and I suppose the rest will too as they soak enough. Here's a pic from another topic:

Re: Cornflakes whiskey
Mine smelt good and I stripped it in 150ml portions of 30 glasses total for cuts and the strippings smelt good and it also tasted nice. I threw into feints bottle about a liter and kept the rest. Now part of it is sitting in jar with oak cubes. Do you guys double distill it or just strip n go? I don...

Re: 3" boka ?'s
I was wondering when I'm planning to make some adjustments to my still(increase packing length from 0.9 to 1.4m), if I'd just get another pipe flange and attach a 3" column to it. Would it allow for how much higher speed @ azeo? I'd only need a 3" SS tube, a flange and little pieces of ste...

Re: All Bran Recipe
My longer-than-usual batch was well finished and I stripped it. I though added some leftovers from liquor and punch and I got total of 8 liters of strippings that have somewhat around 60% abv. I did not bother to run lower than 35% or 97C though. Gonna spirit it tomorrow if I've got the time and mea...

Fancy, I had all bran going on for 7 full days now and it's still going on. It has always been done&cleared before. I quess it's the temperature. Does it hurt to let it sit for another week, because I've got a job related trip in few days and I'll be back at next wednesday?

Re: Cornflakes whiskey
I quess you would lose almost all of the aroma if you distill it up to azeotrope, to the point it would be useless to other than tainted vodka. I'll get to start my cornflakes whiskey tomorrow and at next week I should be able to strip some whiskey off from it and post results here by then. Use less...

And no, it really doesn't need to be that accurate, I find my tolerance to sit within few %, on practice how precise a kitchen measures and scales can do, and...

Re: Calculating liquor ratios?
Don't speak a word of it, but google translate makes it translitterable. The table appears to confirm my calculations. Sugar should be converted to volume from grams (one ml of sugar is 1.59g) and then the ratios are easy to calculate: 42:42:16.

Calculating liquor ratios?
So if we were to make certain liquor drinks that should have for example 40abv alcohol content with 260g/L of sugar and flavor additives, what would be the easiest way to determine the mixing ratios when the basic starting ingredients would be 95abv spirit, table sugar (invert sugar would also work ...

Re: Cornflakes whiskey
Was planning to make batch from this and process it further. In a 65L vat I would put 9kg of inverted sugar and 1.5kg of corn flakes and 200g of yeast and balance of water totalling 50L, ferment it dry and strip it. I would collect strippings in different glasses like spirit run and I would then eva...

Re: Everything you need to know about oak alternatives.
Since making or buying a barrel could be inconvenient, could one make a container for aging whiskey style spirits? Like using a very crude setup of oak planks and stainless steel plate to crimp it in and hold the charred surfaces in there? This gets somewhat desperate.

Re: Using oatmeal for neutral?
I did my first test recently. There were other variables too, like changing SS wool to ceramic raschig ring packing so results may not be directly comparable. I used 1kg of rolled oats (porridge meal) with 750g of all bran, boiled, 7kg of inverted sugar and 250g of yeast, balanced to approx 40-50 li...

Re: Glass Marbles for Reflux Column Structured Packing
Tested raschigs today, had similar output rates to scrubbers but the abv was still limited to 93% at 1.2l/h and it would not rise higher than that.

Re: Glass Marbles for Reflux Column Structured Packing
I havent' been able to source suitable sized glass marbles so I'm gonna test out soon the ceramic raschig rings I have had lying around for good time. I unpacked the SS scrubbers and they were in perfect condition, corrosion-free. I suppose rings shouldn't do that bad on side of marbles?

I could not find glass marbles or even beads anywhere where I live so I got raschig rings from aquarium shop:

Ironic that I read the glass marbles would be better than these.

Re: Glass Marbles for Reflux Column Structured Packing
I don't know about theory but since smooth glass marbles have the smallest possible surface area the effectiveness on distillation must have something to do with thermal buffering which would keep the equilibrium better. If we would go the surface area path scrubbers should do much better job but th...

How many plates should be necessary for azeotropic distillations? 20 or more? What would be the spacing? In 3" still that is 50" long one should have a plate for every 2"?

Re: Perforated plate distillation column VS just packing cop
Is there yet any consensus what does best job on doing neutral azeotrope: scrubber wool packing, lava rock or perforated plate column? I'm getting myself a TIG welder and was going to look for making perforated plate 3-4" if it appears the best.

Re: My 2" boka dimensions check
Yesterday I performed a strip and spirit and highest I got was 92.6% with temperature corrected measurement. Takeoff rate was 500ml/h and temperature sat at 78.3C.
Is this due to insufficient length of packing or something else that azeotrope is not achieved?
