Re: Bushman’s 2 Gallon Gin Recipe

Hey Bushman. I’m really sorry it has taken me this long to get back to you. For various reasons I’ve been away from the hobby since late fall. So, the maceration I put together in late September did not get run until New Year’s. I was expecting a really bitter product. After proofing, I set it to re...

New Use for Foreshots

I’ve discovered a new (to me) use for foreshots. This may be in that “too much information” category, but, my feet sweat like crazy in hot weather and my running shoes and knock around shoes really stink. I have tried everything I can find to solve this with no luck. Last summer I put about 2 ounces...

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas to all (or whatever you and your loved ones celebrate this season). I truly appreciate the friends and acquaintances I’ve made through this site. I hope 2021 finds you healthy and a little more “stable” than 2020 is leaving us.
Take care my friends.

Welcome!
My dad was from Houghton and my uncle was the AD at Michigan Tech. The family moved south when I was less than a year old and we never made it up to the UP for a visit. That trip is on my bucket list.
Hope you enjoy your new hobby.

Re: Column shakes and swings during a stripping run

This is the column support I use. It holds the entire column assembly very stable. There is a smaller one that supports the product condenser. I need to give credit where credit is due, I didn’t actually make these, a friend made them for me.

Re: Column shakes and swings during a stripping run

Greetings Birrofila and welcome to the wonderful world of home distilling. When I assemble my full columns for reflux runs it is over 7 feet tall. I do not get shaking, but, the twisting moment created by adding the condenser sometimes caused the hard PTFE tri-clamp seals to leak. This is not the pr...

Re: A step beyond Odins

Cloudy is not bad, it’s more of a visual thing. As Odin says, it means you have captured a lot of the oils which equal flavor. If it bothers you, add neutral to it a little bit at a time until it clears and enloy!

Re: Bushman’s 2 Gallon Gin Recipe

Staying around Odin’s 12 to 15 g/L of Juniper, I don’t normally get any louching upon proofing. This batch produced a medium louche when proofed.I’m thinking it may be the oils from the citrus. Not a problem, just an observation.

Re: Bushman’s 2 Gallon Gin Recipe

Hey Bushman. I ran the Oden’s recipe with your toasted orange yesterday. While it is new make and hasn’t aged five weeks, I’d have to say it has a very pleasant taste. As of now the orange is a little overpowering. I probably should have put the peel in the vapor but I got lazy and just dumped all t...

Re: Bushman’s 2 Gallon Gin Recipe

I just threw together a 1.5 L maceration of a basic Odin’s recipe using your toasted mandarin peels. There are (per L) 12 g of juniper, 3 g of coriander, and 1/2 of a small mandarin peel. The plan is to let it infuse overnight and then run it with the botanicals in the pot tomorrow. I’ll let you kno...

Re: Bushman’s 2 Gallon Gin Recipe

Hey GB. If you are heating with an external source, then it should not be a problem. I use a 5 L Alembic and heat with a hot plate. I have no trouble running a 1 L batch. If you have other concerns, could you possibly scale up the recipe to a larger batch?

I normally follow Odin’s prescribed 2 weeks if I’m planning to distill “off the botanicals”. If distilling with botanicals in the pot, I charge the pot the night before and distill in the morning.

Re: Bushman’s 2 Gallon Gin Recipe

Yummy ...... does think the five week rest is important. I typically like to mix a G&T right after proofing. It gives me a feel for the recipe. But, I do try to get 4 to 5 weeks of aging in before adding it to the bar stock (unless I’m suffering from a drought!). Man, I do love a summer G&T...

I first did it for the interest in the science of it. Lower cost was never a big consideration. After a few years, it’s more about the art and quality. Lord knows, I’d hate to know how much I have tied up in each bottle thats actually been good enough to drink!
