Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

Hate to blow my horn, but ... a friend came to visit and I broke out my 4 year old SSB for sipping. He'd never sipped rum before, and was surprised something like this existed. He left with three bottles, but he is a very close friend. He later shared it with a friend who he described as "reall...

It looks like my source of molasses has jumped in price. I wanted to make a run or two while it's hot. I'm searching for materials!

Re: Hole size recomendations...

I've used a PTFE sheet with 4 pin holes in it, then the normal ring successfully. I used PTFE sheets that are about 4" square, don't trim them, and screw the lid down over the top.

Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

My barrels are used bourbon barrels I bought. For the first year most of my product was in glass jars with toasted or toasted and charred oak. I wish I knew the answers, but I honestly don't know at what point you have to worry about over oaking with this recipe. The smaller barrel size could have a...

Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

Enjoying a bit of product tonight, 2-3 years now on oak. I think i'm going to do a run to make up for angel's share and to top up the barrels in my Solera system. I've got 4, 5 gl. barrels. I've been really good about leaving it alone, the oldest dates to 2019. going and let it go as long as I can s...

Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

Ran that Radiation Batch, came out well, but it takes all day off of work to do. My 4x4 column will put out about 80% for quite a while, then at the same power it'll slowly sink down to the 60's. I'll make my cuts this weekend, that's the hardest part for me. I might get some help from my daughter. ...

Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

Started my wash several weeks ago now, it finished up well, but it got cold and life got in the way. It's in a 30 gallon trash barrel with a lid and air locks, looks to be great! I sealed it up and let the cold weather refrigerate it by turning the heat off in my shop. Sitting at about 40°F. now. Ta...

Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

Well, I've got a batch about ready to run! I have three full 5 gl. barrels in my solera system, some jars full and waiting. I'm planning on buying another barrel and these two batches I'm about to run should fill it. In the meantime I've been seeking out bottles of what I think are similar, inexpens...

Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

I've been working in a cooler climate and it's taken a full 5-6 days to finish off. It's a slow constant bubbling going on. I keep the room in the 60's F. or higher, usually 70's, and have two aquarium heaters set at a steady 86 F. In the summer it's a different story. I've tried reading BRIX, and d...

Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

My son came over and he helped me move the barrels out to the shed. I'll monitor them more closely, and I plan on making more so I may get another 5 gal going. Thank you, I'll keep you posted. As an aside, my son asked why I made rum and not bourbon. My answer was rum is about the easiest process to...

Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

I'm in a pickle and not sure how to proceed. I've had two 5 gl. barrels aging my SSB in the basement where there isn't much temp change. Maturing is slow, but I don't want to "overoak" as I've seen mentioned a lot with small barrels and whiskey. I don't have many other choices except an ou...

Re: Copper Whiskey Thief

Looks very nice 8Ball. I recently made mine from a piece of 1.25" copper pipe. I have a .25" hole in each end. If I had a scrap of 1.5" I'd like to make another. I formed my point through a process of hammering/annealing/hammering repeatably. I then soldered a flat piece onto the end.

Well, it's been 34 months since I made my first SBB batches. I have 10 gallons in in two used 5 gallon bourbon barrels from a distillery. I put up two 5 gl. bourbon barrels hoping to get my solara system up and running. It's coming on 3 years now and I haven't had a chance to get my still running with a property move and all. Haven't even looked at them. Just kind of hoping they're nice when I get around to it. I've got a third barrel...

Re: are whiskey barrels "toasted"

I took a tour of Independent Stave in Lebanon, KY a few years ago. They didn't mention toasting. What I saw was a production where the finished barrel without end caps was stood upright over an intense flame from below. This lasted less than a minute and the flames were shooting out the top by a cou...

Gasflux. With stainless you need to braze, not solder. Higher heat. Use 56% silver and Gasflux U. It's a good place to start, steep learning curve.

Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

I'd like to transition my SBB adventures to a Solara setup, but I'm not sure I should. I have 10 gallons of SBB on oak in half gallon glass jars with PTFE lids with pinholes. They've been up in the attic of the garage for a year and a half undisturbed. Some jars are darker than others, a bit of vari...

I agree, and then let it sit with a bit of ventilation for as long as possible. Seemed to make a big difference with my product.

I also use them under the standard Ball lid. I don't think being too thin is an issue, possibly makes them better. It's possible the product I bought is no longer out there, but I'd suggest you keep looking and possibly cut your own if necessary.

"Papa" How I drink My UJSSM

"Papa" is what I call it, and it came about in the midst of reading several Hemingway books this year.
Adjust proportions as you like, works well with gin also.

3 parts white UJSSM
2 parts coconut water
2 parts tonic
1 part lime juice, I squeeze a large section and throw it in

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method

I use 1/2 gallon Ball canning jars. I got 4" x 4" PTFE squares on amazon, I'm sure they're still out there, cheap, precut, perfect size. I just screw the lid ring on right over the PTFE, added benefit is I have no liquor vapors in contact with the metal ring. There is room between the jar ...

I like this simply because I'd rather have all of my flavoring come through from the initial ferment, not added as an afterthought.

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method

I've have been in the middle of a move over the last year, and lost my still house in the process. Because of this I have lots of 1/2 gallon jars of UJ white stored away with ptfe lid liners and pin holes. Most of this is about a year old now and I've got to say it's improved. I've only aged on wood...

I'm not exactly sure how the physics works for "more angels share on a less than full barrel." Does it refer to the portions of the barrel which are dry having more cracks for vapor to evaporate out of? Is it an advantage for the barrel to be completely "wet." Just trying to asce...

Re: SBB's All Molasses Rum Recipe

I started making SBB Rum last jan., and have a good amount put up on both charred and uncharted oak. Just took Salt Bush Bill's advice and am trying really hard to keep my mitts off of it. It helped that we moved, I lost my still space, and have it all in storage in my son's garage attic. I've got t...
