I have experienced the same thing with DWWG, in a combanation jug of stripped runs/tails. I believe that the "floaters" came from stripping to fast. I have since made the spirit run, and noticed no ill effects.
I am "still" figuring this out but I learn fast.

I've got a element question. I just picked up a couple 120v elements and both of them have just over an inch of plastic near where they meet up with the base.
I am guessing that the plastic is there to prevent scale build up in its intended application?

How long did you soak/boil it for? Water will definitely dissolve salt, eventually. Did you make sure the coil was completely filled with water? Just dropping it in water might still leave air pockets inside the coil that do not dissolve the salt. I've been fooling with it for several days. I guess...
