Re: Why do you distill ? Cost or Quality ?

Anything I do on my own gives me a sense of pride. I think that was my initial reason. I still get that through improvement. I'm still young in this, so I've got lots of improvement to look forward to. I do, also remember feeling cheated and pissed off at the price of the last bottle I bought though...

Re: First sacrificial stripping run

Sounds like you're doing it the right way. Wish my little still had that kind of output. 2 hrs would probably get me around 3 qrts on a full out stripping run....

Re: Second Run (We don't need to talk about the first)

I'm king of bush league. I ferment everything in 5 gallon pails, so my mashes are usually 4.5 gallons +/- a bit. But my I got my bourbon ABV up to 11+% this year. In a single run, 6 gallon pot, that mash gets me around 1.9 qrts between 100 to 110 proof. 20 gallons @ 10% should be achievable, I would...

Welcome, from Alberta!

I've been doing this less than two years and I've build 2 stills. Making and improving equipment is almost as fun as distilling and drinking.

Good luck!

Re: Using Bananas to Convert Starches to Sugars

Honestly, I can't. My process is pretty bush league, at present. Lol. I just started. Last year was a test. I loved it, so this year will be taken a little more serious. 10 cups/3.3lbs corn 1 cup/5oz Steal Cut Oats 1 cup/5oz Pot Barley 10 cup/3.3lbs Sugar 4 tsp baking yeast 2-3 Black Bananas 1 Green...

Re: Using Bananas to Convert Starches to Sugars

I've used green bananas in my bourbon mash for this purpose and it works. I just cut a couple up, peel and all, into the thick starchy mash, and its thinned right out by the time I go to use it. Green bananas have the enzymes available because they haven't been used up in the ripening process. They ...

Hello from Alberta!

Hello everyone, Just saying a quick hello. I'm from Alberta. I work in the Oilfield and I'm a family man. I'm interested in distilling for the same reasons that I grow and gather food, or fix my own vehicles, a little self stability and pride. I built a little pot still and I'm fermenting my first m...
