Southern States Whole Oats

I was in the local seed store and saw a 50lbs bag of Southern States Whole Oats, crimped Oats and flaked barley for sale as horse feed.

Would there be any issue using these for Oat whiskey?
Would they be old and stale?
Could the oats be malted?

I'm a little leary since they are being sold as feed.

You can throw anything with ethanol in a still and make it stronger and more pure. Putting Tequila in a still might not be a bad idea, atleast it would taste better.

Unless you're getting your booze for free it would be more economical to make your own wash.

Nykter; Lest talk about that continuous striper. I've been thinking about do one myself. It would consist of a single ¾” pipe that would coil in side a sealed water bath. There would be an input pipe at the top and outlet at the bottom. Once the water bath is up to temp the wash would trickle in to ...

I know i didnt convert the oat starch to sugar but i thought i would have gotten more flavor from the oats. Oh well live and learn. Hey...

stupid question about soldering

When I built my pot still I drilled a hole in the top of the column for a thermometer. Now I don't use the thermometer any more and I want to plug that hole. I can't seem to get solder to stick to it. I've cut a small piece of copper tube and flattened it then tried to solder it to the top of the co...

I was watching a thing on tv the other day about the woodford distillery in kentucky. They were fementing the mash in huge open vats. I've been thinking about making whiskey, Scotch in particular, from 100% malted barley. I just got back from the local brew shop and was presented with a huge array of different types of malted barley. Does any one have any recomendations. My instinct tell me to try them all.

If you are making rum all you should need is that gallon of molasses, 4 gallons water and some yeast. I found recently that adding some yeast nurtient will help but is not really needed. Molasses generaly has all the nutrients you need.
