Re: New Boiler up and running.
Rock -- Propane here is $20 for a 20# tank were you getting them filled or trading them out at the big box store? getting them filled should be less pricy. at $4.00/gal. I'd switch too. I get them filled, much cheaper. Also, if you get it filled you get a full 20 pounds. However if you trade...

Re: New Boiler up and running.
Surprising. My rig is only 5 gallons but so far I've done a corn gelatinizing batch, 3 stripping runs, and 1 spirit run, all off of a 20 pound propane bottle ($13.50 USD). And it's not quite empty yet. (And I'm pretty sure I did my vinegar run and sac run off this same bottle but can't remember for ...

Do the calibration solutions have a shelf life once they are mixed up? I do always shake mine up before using. And store in a glass jar with mason lid.

Re: Applying heat to the kettle
as the heat rises I gradually lower the power, without jerking, gently until I get the power and warm-up I want and then it generally stays that way throughout the run. There may be variables in the route but this is the basis. At about what point in this sequence does the flow start? Are you still...

Welcome to HD instillonight. I also have one of those "football looking" column stills, and although it won't impress anybody I am quite happy with how it works. Sounds like you've already been doing some reading which will serve you well.

Re: pH meter
From that read it seems that unless conditions and use are 100% perfect the readings they give can be way off target. I have one of these, $20 USD on Amazon. I check it with calibration liquid every time I before I use it. Most of the time it tests within about .1 of what it's supposed to. Occasion...

Re: Tell us about your mistakes.
Try Aloe Vera next time, It's supposed to be loaded with lots of good stuff and should make for a very entertaining video when you try to run it :D The okra and everything else that was floating in the wort eventually clumped on the surface. I easily skimmed it off and it left a very clear wash. It...

Re: Tell us about your mistakes.
I looked up the nutritional values of okra and noticed that it is better than kale in almost all categories. So I used okra for nutrients in a sugar wash. I never thought about what might be the effect of the okra's slime factor although I certainly enjoy eating slimy boiled okra. Five okra pods wer...

Re: Dibosh CM Reflux still from China
What is the football shaped gadget supposed to be/do? There's a screen in the lower half, to allow packing. Mine came with a pkg of porous ceramic balls that can go in there, for a bit of reflux action i assume. Haven't gotten familiar enough with it yet to know if any refluxing happens. Maybe it c...

Re: Controlling water flow on condenser
Regarding water efficiency, I re-use the same water, drawing from a 55 gallon barrel and discharging into the same barrel. The key to stable input water temperature is to draw from the bottom of the barrel and discharge to the top so the warmer water stays at the top, same principle as a home water ...

As a new distiller myself, I have to say I don't understand the basis of his question. Sounds like he's wanting to know if DADY will give him more alcohol than bakers in otherwise identical wash. I know next to nothing about this hobby yet but in 2 weeks of reading here I think I understand that if ...

Googe's kale-sugar wash with a twist
I am fascinated by Googe's kale-sugar wash but I didn't plant any kale in my garden this year. :( After researching the nutrient amounts in kale I found that okra has the same or better in most nutrients that I can identify as being important to yeast. The main deficit that I see is that kale has 36...

How much did you grow/Harvest? Sounds fun! Cheers, Jonny It's just a big garden. Based on my seed spacing it works out to be about 4000 corn plants. OG1058? Doesn't sound too bad to me but I'm new. I lived in West Texas for 30 years. Sure could have got a ton of those things for free about anywhere. They are often called "Tunas" there. I used to eat one now and then, there's a wide variety of sweetness amounts from one to another, and ...

Jr-dist - Thanks for the input. Every year I plant 50% of my corn without selecting for anything special, just to keep the gene pool robust. The corn experiment - in 2014 I bought 17 varieties of heirloom corns. I've been harvesting my corn for the past couple of weeks. It's all by hand, my hand specifically - the pulling, the shucking, the hanging to dry. (as well as the planting and hoeing). It's been an every day task since early April but it's given me something to do and kept me sane during Covid. Look...

Converting with malted corn
I've been researching the prospect of converting gelatinized corn with malted corn. There's plenty of info on HD on how to malt it and dry it. And plenty of opinions on how strong its diastatic power is. Anyway for starters I intend to try it at 75/25 cornmeal/malt ratio. This is probably not enough...

It's hard to tell for sure from the pics but it looks like it might be possible to arrange the straps for either series or parallel connection? Parallel would be handy if a person needed lower total wattage and more heating surface area per watt to reduce the chance of scorching. I think you’re bac...
