favorite charred wood and why

I have been doing a lot of reading on using wood to flavor and color your spirits. I want to know what everyone's favorite wood to use is and why it is your favorite. (No 'wood' jokes . . . . . . . .unless they are really funny  ) Is it the only thing available, taste, easy of preparation? What...

Hey ChillinDistillin, could you use a paper gasket for the boiler? I use flour too and it is a bitch when doing several runs, as I clean it after each run. I thought about using papertowels!! Anybody tried that?? Sounds like a new thread.

That recipe Wineo gave you is a good one. I use that for my vodka, except for the dap and the gypsum salt. I also invert my sugar for about 25 minutes. WATCH OUT for a big pot of boiling sugar water, that shit will stick to you and burn like napalm. Especially if you get all 8 pounds of sugar in the...

Thanks for your help guys. I want to let it settle, less work, but also less shine in the meantime!! I think I will split it in two and settle one with egg whites and the other I will just do a stripping run on it and do a few more runs to make sure the yeast is all cleared out. I will re-post once ...

clearing a UJSM with egg whites???

Hello shiners. Question for you all. I need to clear my wash and on the front of keeping cheap I wanted to just use a couple of egg whites. I don't really have the time to let it settle . . . . . . . . . . . . well, ok. I just don't WANT to wait for it to settle. It's like Christmas waiting to see h...

With a big still like that you are going to have to make several, several runs to completely clean out all the green gunk. Just keep adding a little vinegar each time till it comes out clean. After you don't see anymore green stuff you need to do about two more runs to get all the vinegar out, just ...

I just boiled the corn flakes and the corn a little to kill any bacteria and the water is a lovely yellow color and full of smell and flavor. I am adding a little of that to the mix as well. I am also pitching another 21 grams of yeast as I did a little experimentation this time. I met an old moonsh...

A slobber box is to collect the "slobber" that could possibly come up from the boiler (won't happen though if you have packing in the column) The incoming tube doesn't go to the bottom of the mason jar in a slobber box, it simply allows the vapor to go from one tube to the other and allows the heavi...

I would try a champagne yeast, ec-1118, they can withstand a high abv and produce no strong tastes. Go for the apple thing straight away!! Why not? What kind of still are you using? Sounds like a reflux since you are making neutral spirit. Do you have a pot still? If you use a lot of apples make sur...

Like Dnderhead said make sure you dilute the everclear down before distilling it. Personally if you want to practice distilling something other than your own wash I would use a cheap wine. Ever clear is a decent liquor, use it to compare your own sugar wash with.

A little calcium carbonate could do the trick. Just make sure you only add about a tsp of it already mixed with some water to dissolve it fully. Do you add more yeast each time you start another wash or do you rely only on the previous yeast already in the fermenter? I would definitely add some nutr...

That is a nice looking piece. :) Should produce a lot of product. Is that a slobber box or a thumper there? Either way you should take the packing out of that. The reason for the packing is to create a reflux action and it sends some of the non alcohol back down the column to mix with the rising vap...

adding corn flakes midway

Hey shiners, been a while. Gotta question for you all. I have a sugar wash I am fermenting right now about three days in. I use a pot still with a thumper and I do a stripping run every time. I push it hard the whole way through. I don't seperate the heads, hearts or tails since I will be doing that in the final run. Remember, it is a 'stripping' run. You are just 'stripping' the good stuff from the other stuff (non al...

You don't need to use scrubs in your doubler since the primary function of the scrubs is to increase the reflux ratio in the first stage. When using a pot still you don't even need a doubler.....aka thumper. I use one on my pot still and I am putting off 160 proof on the stripping run. You need to d...

They are called wine drinkers. Before you distill your "mash" it is just basically a wine; some call it wines. Depending on the wash you are making it might not taste good until you distill it. If you want to drink it prior to distilling make sure you are making a suitable wine for drinking.

In a pot still a good place for your therm. is in the thumper...if you have one. Since the boiler vapor is going into the thumper first and the liquid in the thumper has to come to temp before the vapor goes into your condensor then it makes sense to have the therm at the entrance way to the condens...

I wonder if there is any good use for all that foam?

Let's see, you could use it to top your pie with.
Or as a full lather shaving cream.
Maybe you could dry it out and use it as an energizer for your next mash?

Pot stills bring over more flavor. Reflux stills are more for producing a nuetral spirit. You can make vodka with a reflux, but you can't really make a good whisky with a reflux.
