Kinda a general post, in response / reply / support / to expand to what has been said by bagasso, myles, junkyard.... Second, carbon has its place, just be smart about what you are doing. Yes, cuts... yes, quality washes... but consider this. I like vodka. I don't like paying for ingredients. I get ...

Re: How many AG guys sneak in a little sugar?

At the moment I'm doing 50% heavy peated malt and 50% bulk liquid malt extract washes. I guess it'd be called a partial mash, if you wanted to put a label on it. Bugger me it smells amazing though, even raw. It's a good way to "cheat" and still retain all-grain flavour, and I can get the e...

Re: Cheapest clearing agent

El-z - try to find a cheap old fridge or freezer on whatever secondhand goods website is common around your neck of the woods. You can normally pick them up for almost nothing. Then, if you want to get really obsessive about your ferments, you can put a dual channel controller on it ($25 on ebay ex ...

if you absolutely must hurry, try gelatin + cold crashing. 1 tablesppon of gelatin per 25L of wash, prepeared like this: add gelatin to 1 cup of hot tap water in a small pot, let sit to "bloom" for 20 mins or so. then gently, gently, gently heat up the pot, stirring often, to 170F, then re...

Re: Heat Rejection Designs....

dropping or defusing wasn't enough to last me a run with a 50L boiler before my distillate was steaming (must be about a 300L reservoir?). I opted for a car radiator in the cooling return line and a household fan ducted onto it - that does the trick for me. multiple runs in a day no worries, the coo...

Ordering from Amphora in the states is the best option I could find without buying kilos and kilos of the stuff. It's pretty affordable with the dollar at the moment.

Re: Gday from Auckland, NZ

Hey mate, regarding your kegs question, try dropping Keg Resources a line (google them). They're up in glenfeild and they decommission all the kegs for the big breweries, so it's all above board. If you want one both fast and cheap, you'll have to let your morals slide a bit and talk to some unscrup...

Gotta chime in here and say that the best aged spirit I've ever made is an all feints (including heads, but not foreshots) rum . Hey Kiwi, how did it taste before the aging process? Did it have a sting? How many generations of recycled heads? My second to last run was pretty awesome, full grainy/fr...

Re: Rerunning Feints

Gotta chime in here and say that the best aged spirit I've ever made is an all feints (including heads, but not foreshots) rum. It's about 3 years old now, give or take, and going great. Still on oak in glass, aired regulary. After a year I added a touch more oak, charred, after two batches of UJSM ...

There is a really strong home brew community in Nelson, you should try to hook up with some of those guys if you haven't already. They get the cheapest grain and hops I've heard of in NZ, through the Sprig and Fern. You can probably find them easy on forum.realbeer.co.nz. I swear they have some sort...

Cool. Yeah try adding some dunder to the spirit run, but also try a low heat and the wet towel treatment on the strip, or at least at the start of the strip for an hour or so if you want to experiment  Lotta ways to play round with rum if chemistry's your buzz.

Re: Ethyl Propionate in Rum

Giving it a long reflux before taking off product with low to no reflux will get you good esterification and smear it nicely into hearts. If you can't reflux, strip very very slow in the pot and place wet towels around the column / top of the boiler to slow things down even further. I think (and may...

The esteemed Mr Hookline has suggested I offer my services as a forwarding agent to Nathan if anyone is more comfortable doing that. Happy to do it via pm or email if that would assist any stateside distillers who want to pipe up and keep another layel of anonymity between them and the media.

Re: Dunder pits and yeast beds...

Hell, most of us are trying to get or dunder pits infected, so you should be right with that one. A couple of litres of boiled (then cooled) water on top of your yeast bed should keep it happy, or just make up another wash, it'll be waiting for you when you return.
