Re: Butter Rum

transferred my first batch to my keg and as I type it's slowly heating up for butterfication™

hopefully run it tomorrow!

didn't take OG or FG, but had it set to 90f for a week, and then let it go to ambient (75 or so) for the past day or so

no fizzing left

I did 1/2” in my 2” column

Initially tried to do a coil but gave up trying to squeeze it in.

Ended up doing a set of nested & crossed U’s plumbed in series and so far has worked great.

Re: Butter Rum

Don't know if you saw the recipe from Corinne for a 'vanilla' rum with malted red wheat and high quality molasses, I'm planning my next mash after I run this weekend using that recipe, then doing the butter treatment to that. I'm also adding .5lb of honey malt to that, and once I have the distillat...

Re: Another Sign of The Apocalypse

I had a basement tenant who was a guy in his mid 20s, seemed like a decent kid just a bit stupid. After a few months something's started to raise red flags. He worked as a landscaper, had his own buisiness until he lost his license for impaired driving, he jumped in his work truck to drive 2min to ...

Re: Butter Rum

If you're going for double pot style, I'd blast the first one, and go deeper than 40% low wines. Like at least 30%. Pencil lead steady stream on the spirit run. No need for slow. I've done the butter treatment on a highly refluxed single run, as well as a refluxed 1.5. They are sitting, airing, chi...

So strip, usually averages 40%, and then simply run again thru my Liebig?

I can strip it easily, but then how would you do a spirit run in a column? Minor packing? No packing?

Yes: I’ve been suspending lemons above my vodka for a while now. Works great. Lovely subtle flavor. I have some lemon essential oil. Maybe I’ll try an experiment starting off with a few drops at a time. White lemonchello. :D Or maybe orange oil in a gin? I’ll have to give it a go. JBC Orangecello i...

Re: Lava rock taking <1/2 the power for better results

I know 94-95 is an improvement, but 50" of lava can piss out neutral azeotrope. My current config is a little shorter than that, and I keep 2 or 3 plugs of copper mesh in there too. 50" and all screened lava ought to be hard to not get azeo. Fix that liquid trap at the bottom and you'll b...

Re: Lava rock taking <1/2 the power for better results

hpby98 mentions fast heatups. I reckon that's where the major flooding occurs and then never gets the chance to totally drain away. Otis I collect my fores very slowly as well; at 2 drops a second; it took 45 minutes last run. hpby98, once you are collecting hearts it is good to be able to moderate...

I took some bare copper ground wire I had laying around, bent it into a 3d spiral, 1st wrap around outside of column, subsequent wraps freehand but getting tighter. Overall about 3" high. Point up, like a round pyramid. The first wrap is a friction fit inside the column, like a spring. Maybe i...

Re: Lava rock taking <1/2 the power for better results

So I find this thread interesting and confusing at the same time. When you flood are you talking about a first run or spirit run when you “flood”. I ask because it seems strange to me you are flooding at such a low power setting and think you could be puking, not flooding? Just a guess. If this is ...

Re: Lava rock taking <1/2 the power for better results

There is no need and running a screen at the top, you shouldn't be running so hard as to move your packing that far. Is there any way that you could punch larger holes in the screen that you are using? I put it on the top as well as I puked raschig rings once during heatup at full power. I have a 3...
