How is your thumper fed?
Does the feed tube from the boiler come in to the bottom of your thumper?

If it does what is happening is as the boiler cools it creates vacuum and sucks your thumper dry.

As your column is insulated your vapor really isn't slowing down or starting to cool. Adding the scrubbers will help slow down that rush of vapor too.
