Boiling point of EtOH and azeotrope

Postby WV Shine » Mon Apr 23, 2012 10:13 pm

I had talked about this in a previous post.... turns out I don't have to do the math afterall :sarcasm: Found a chart that gives the boiling point of water, ethanol, and azeotrop at different elevations. Hope its useful for anyone up in the mountains ;)

thanks.. i never looked this up... i guess im at 77.1... that explains some things...

i feel rather stupid now.... i've never seen this mentioned on here.... (I knew elevation mattered, but, im in the flatlands of IL... guess its still almost 1000 feet)

seems to me that 78.1 is rather mythical for most people.

Now, what to do.... Calibrate my thermometer to the correct nembers for my elevation OR keep it calibrated with the difference adjusted.... guess it'll work either way

@ WV..... If you calibrate your thermometer to 212 for boiling water than your elevation will be irrelevant... If you're using an encapsulated mercury/alcohol/wax thermometer than this chart should be somewhat helpful

I live a few feet below sea level, so thank you WV for the info!

Ha yea I did too... I was flippin out the first run I made w/ my VM... On the cleaning run w/ vinegar my brand new fancy-pants thermometer was reading 93F or thereabouts... I was pissed! I think I realized what was wrong a few days later when I was making pasta and realized it took a bit longer due to the elevation  The difference is pretty huge where I am... azeotrope is at 73.3C?!

I'm at +1350 and never worry about exact temperature readings or corrections, just stabilization and changes...

When I lived a 9000 feet, it took forever to boil potatoes. Around 10000, you can't cook them by boiling. Now I live at 50'.
