Condenser with no jacket

Post by googe »

Hey all, been wondering for a while, how would a condenser with no outer jacket work?. eg: a pot still, output tube 1/2" pipe with a kind of rain roof around it, water flows from.the top down the sides of the 1/2" to a collection point at the bottom. Just a brain fart  .

If a condenser can be made to cool with air, why not? Might get a little messy if the flow gets high enuff to splash off the turbulator though.

The biggest problem is it's co-current. A short jacket at the bottom might take care of that, but for no jacket you would have to rely on length. It is an idea worth playing with.

OK what's the advantage here?

Fettercairn Distillery in Scotland use this principle to cool the column of their still. They also use a normal condenser.

True that tpee!. Was thinking because KY would be exposed to the atmosphere it might cool better Chris, not needing as much length?. Thanks tok. didn't think of any advantages crow, just an idea in general. Cool.McMello w, be interesting to see it!.

One advantage would be cheaper. No need to buy an outer jacket.

I did think of how I could use the principles of a coolgardie safe to condense vapour especially coming from a semi arid district originally. As i don't muck about with pot stills any more my idea's have been shelved for the time being

You'd probably need to slow the progress of the water down the tube to give it time to take up the heat, plus give time and surface area for evaporation. It might only need something as simple as a wrap of hessian. A fan would help. I've got my doubts it would make a shorter condenser possible and I don't pay for water, so I'll let you go first.

The question is....why?

It seems a little messy. And I would think that the water will "mist" somewhat such that some may splatter.

At a local fair years ago, there was an advertiser/vendor who sold water softeners and his marketing gimmick was a faucet up in the air (10 feet, or so) that had water running from the spigot's outlet. The water was cascading down over a concentric inner pipe (you couldn't see) that carried the water up to the faucet, in a similar manner to your sketch. It was novel and as a kid it looked intriguing...how could water magically come out of the "floating faucet" continuously like that?

But there was a slight overspray coming off of the waterfall all the time. He had it running over a 55 gallon barrel, so not much ever landed on the floor however. Funny thing...the sound of the splashing water all the time made me want to go to the bathroom!

First thought that came to my unscientific mind was that your cooler water would be hitting your condenser at the point of the most vapor inside.

Looks to me like this would cause some serious huffing and vapor collapse.. YMMV

Also, from an efficiency standpoint...counterflow is more efficient. Parallel flow is much less efficient at heat transfer. And contact time is also key to heat transfer too. That's why a Liebig with a jacket that has a wound spiral in the water jacket works so well...you set up a swirling motion which increases contact time and conduction surface area while increasing the Reynolds number at the same time.

If you want to watch the water velocity or flow speed, simply jacket the vapor pipe with a clear vinyl hose. That's what I've got on my coiled Liebig product cooler off of the LM outlet.

As mentioned before, without a jacket you miss the counterflow cooling.

The loss of a good temp gradient is the issue. Other than that it would make a nice water feature.

Why? Just because. Probably would be insufficient, probably would huff with cold first, probably would splash water, like I said, just a brain fart. Thanks mcmellow, unusual design, must bump up the abv a bit.

If you made a water slide like vane around the condenser the flow would be slowed and hit all around it. It would be fun to watch.
