What about a library?

Post by Kareltje »

One of the nice things of this hobby is, that there is always something to learn.
When I go to the library of our university or browse on the internet I often want to make a print of an article or at least store a link. While I was reading and posting around on HD some collegues gave very useful links, but it is difficult to find them again if needed in some other discussion.
Often I see questions here on HD that are already researched by real scientists. The ones with sophisticated equipment, like gaschromatographs and the like.

Would it not be convenient to have a place where we can find articles, figures, drawings, photos and links about/of/to useful information?

I tried to link to the HDwiki to check if this already answered my question, but the server could not be found.

The whole website is one of those. How do you decide what goes in and what doesn't? You're given tools to dig, so start digging. If you want to make a pile, like Cranky did, go ahead. Build it. With enough head nodding, it may even become a sticky.

You move a mountain one pebble at a time. Time to get started.

Thanks Karl and go ahead with all the other links you have.

And please repair the first link. We don't want to know, where to find it on your computer, but where online.

And a translation of the hungarian pdf would be very very helpful.

Info on the net is transient, so a list of links needs constant upkeep.

I keep everything of value on my own, backed up, system, so that I don't have to refer to the net. That means that searches for anything useful I might have found in the past only need to be conducted in my own system and the info can never vanish because the original publisher lost interest, died, was abducted by aliens, whatever.

@der wo:
Yes, I saw that too late.
Translations I can not give. I dowloaded the Hungarian book as Palinka spoke very high of it. Of course I do not speak or read the language, but drawings, tables and graphs can be understood with the help of a dictionary. Beware though: misunderstanding is easy!

@NZChris:
Yes, i know that teh net is transient. That is why I try to give author, title and journal, incl. volume and issue of print. So one can go to the library of the nearest university to find the original article and make notes or a copy.
And indeed: articles I find interesting or important I try to get in my own hands.
But this project can be supported by everyone, so if you find a obsolete link, you can post the replacement.
Feel free to add!!

I will make one more contribution.
Unfortunately a lot of articles are only available as abstracts or first page, unless you pay.
I think that is not fair, for most research is paid by us all (taxpayer or consumer), it is for the good of us all and some research has been done a long time ago.

I have very different parts of the whole proces.

In a discussion about aluminium someone gave a link to an article about lead in moonshine and it results.
Unfortunately I can only get the abstracts, but these are nonetheless interesting. And they lead to more information.

Re: What about a library?

A catalogued library of ebooks is in fact not a bad idea, not these random links but a elibrary. I know of at least 2 distilling libraries on the net and one here would be great. The thing is setting them up is a power of work and someone needs to maintain it deciding what goes where and what is relevant and what is not. You need someone pretty committed to make such a collection of books worthwhile and also there maybe some copyright issues with a lot of the content

You are very right!
I began to experience the drawbacks of this system.
What shall we do?

Some 25 years ago I used a program called Cardbox on my DOS-computer. This was easy to work with. Authors, title, source, year, keywords and on the back an abstract. The database was filled by a lot of different people (which was visible in the use of language!) and was almost self-organizing. I had to make a large database to a book, so skip the doubles, harmonize the keywords, correct spelling etc. This proved to be relatively easy.

What I would like most is setting up the links, so everybody can read the whole article (or book) if desired. Or at least the abstract.
Copyright will be a problem. I try to solve that by downloading via the library of the university and then print a copy or send the download in a personal e-mail. Done on a large scale it will attract attention, but on a small scale it will not be a problem.
And the scale will be small: most members are hardly interested in scientific literature and the ones who are are capable of finding these texts by themself.

You said you know of two libraries on the net, why not linking to one or both? That would make the job superfluous.
And we should save as much energy as we can, should we not?

Harry took that site down so I don't think the actual link works.

OK, rather than search multiple links here is a direct link:

I keep everything of value on my own, backed up, system, so that I don't have to refer to the net. That means that searches for anything useful I might have found in the past only need to be conducted in my own system and the info can never vanish because the original publisher lost interest, died, was abducted by aliens, whatever.
I agree sir, however, I have aload of knowledge stored on 3" disc, 3.5" disc - not too mentintion 5" disc, Vhs, and even reel to reel , 8 track, and cassettes - some of those are getting very dificult to read now because f the "wonderfull world of UPGRADES" Even VHS and DVD are getting sort of scary - if you're stuck with recoerds on them :tired:

I think it would be cool to have a review section on purchasable stills too. I was looking around for something like that when I got started and found it conspicuously missing. It would be very interesting to see a persons review change over time as they try and learn new things. For example I thought my MileHi 8 gallon reflux still was pretty neat until I upgraded to a 4in column and saw how all the dynamics of the run changed so much. Blissfully ignorant...
