Need a stupid easy kit.

Post by jedneck »

I am looking at getting a beer kit for my uncle. If you follow some of my posts he had a slight oops at work. He cut his wrist and cut an artery, the 2 main nerves and a bunch of tendons, looking at 6-9 month for full recovery. He is one that is always busy and I know its driving him nuts being limited in activities. In the past he stated that he was thinking about starting to brew beer. So I figured I'd get him a get well present.
Just looking for a good cheap kit. Not sure if he could handle a full mash protocol right now but an extract kit would be doable. Anybody have any recommendations or avoidances?
Thankee Jed.
welcome aboard some of us are ornery old coots but if you do a lot of
reading and don't ask stupid questions you'll be alright most are
big help

Festa brew aredead simple no boil even needed. Wort is in a bad pour in fermentor and add yeast..

What kind of beer he like? I can look for some partial mash kits..

He might be able to do brew in a bag also.... Its not bad... similar to a parial mash..

Another option would be for you to make the wort for him.. to his specs from an all grain recipe and then let him do the rest?

I know this is not the answer that you're looking for, but "good" and "cheap" don't go together.

There are a lot of factors that go into making flaw-free beer that you just can't do on the cheap, such as fast cooling, fermentation temperature control, proper oxygenation, etc. Instead of buying him a kit straight away, take with him to a local homebrew club meeting a few times to expose him to the beers and some experienced homebrewers. At that point, you will probably/hopefully be exposed to the good, the bad and the ugly of homebrewed/homebrewing beer and can decide on buying equipment after that.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
IS

Jed,

Here's a tasty (easy to make) beer kit. Makes 4-1/2 to 5 to gallons.

Now, I'd suppose that sounds more like an Irish red (head). Maybe not, but I always thought the reds were more "assertive".

I've made some tasty beers with nothing but a Mr. Beer kit. The extract that comes with it is very boring, but you've got the whole world of extracts open to you. I still use the fermenters for small experiments.

i would recomend a big ol pot with a tap, hop bazzoka, maybe a electric element, an immersion chiller and a frementer or 3.
hopefully set up somewhere with easy acsees to water.

depending on his capability.
extract is the easiest. i would get a bag of extra light dme or light dme and a few diferent hops. then he would be able to do some hop trials. i would recomend citra, chinook, amarillo, simcoe.
set up clean pot, fill with water, heat, add dme, boil hops, chill, trensfer wort (i just let the wort stream from kettle to fv oxigenates well), pitch yeast.
shouldnt be much lifting or effort needed for smaller batch sizes.

ag would be more dificult needing more equipment. could be a good target for progression as he heals.
