Moonshine.. why do you get so wasted?

Okay let me preface this with I'm a big whiskey drinker and an avid home chemist (its my hobby not a profession.)

ABV comparable, why do you get so wasted on equal amounts of shine compared to equal amounts of whiskey? And why is the high different? Does anyone have any scientific explanation for it? Is it the different esters that are in the shine compared to the OTC (over the counter) whiskies?
