help removing odor from used bottles

Postby CoOkEd » Sun Dec 27, 2009 10:23 pm

I was certain that I read a thread somewhere here that contained information and fully cleaning and removing odors from used bottles but I can`t seem to track it down. I have a bucket full of cinnamon whisky bottles that I found in recycling and want to use them as storage. However, the cinamon odor is very strong and I can`t seem to eliminate it. I tried using soap & water and vinegar & water but it`s still there. The thread I read it on may have used foreshots and baking soda?

Anyone have a great method for deordorizing bottles ?

how about trying some sodium carbonate (washing soda) Im thinking the brewers use it,
maybe 1/2 cup in 10 qt/L of water.

Thanks, I will give that a go.

I ran downstairs to check as the wife uses `laundry soda` for the clothes but the ingredients say sodium silicate. Will venture to the stores tomorrow as the Boxing day craziness should have died down by now.

sodium silicate in laundry???
sodium carbonate used to remove stains/odors , Im thinking it is what you have left after heating sodium bycarbonte (baking soda)
(did not think it mite work on Gooses jars) it is cheep, helps remove beer wine stains.works as a laundry "booster"
sodium silicate is used as high temp. binder, fire proofing ,diping eggs, silicone rubber, etc.

(I could be wrong as I have CRS)

Yep, package says all natural laundry soda containing sodium silicate and coconut surfactants. I figured it wouldn't work. However, looked it up on the net this morning to discover it contains more than what was listed on the package. It has sodium carbonate, sodium metasilicate, sodium chloride, citric acid, and sodium lauryl ether sulphate. I'll give it a go and see if the cinnamon disappears.

Try using a little bleach straight, just enough to cover the bottom (for max surface area). leave the lid off and let 'em sit a few days, , , ,-hey-

I've used sterilizing solution (such as One Step) for used wine bottles as well as straight bleach. For some hard deposits and/or odors I put the bottles in the oven on 450°F for an hour or so. Seems to work too. A bottle brush is a necessity too.

I am not familiar with the particular bottles you have; but:

It might be worth while to see if you can get new lids, or possibly new sealing discs (not sure what else to call them, the thing that sits under the lid to seal it.)

Quite often the odour retention is more in the lids /discs than the actual bottles.

P.S. Don't know the weather where you are but leaving the bottles and lids (separately!) in the hot sunshine for a few days is likely to help.

P.P.S. Store low wines in the bottles for a while, making sure you turn them upside down or lay them on the side from time to time; or use them to store some spirit you plan to use for a (fruit?) liqueur that will be fine with a hint of cinnamon.

Yup, that's what I do. A week and the smelliest jars are smelling as sweet as ... :)
