Feints run question

Post by 1965 wite »

So I'm on gen five of my ujssm. I have done four 25 gallon ferments. I've been stripping 12.5 gals at a time into big half gallon jugs. Every time I run the still I throw out the fore shots (6oz). I've done two 6 gallon low wine spirit runs so far. Each time I have kept between three to four quarts of 160 proof hearts. The heads and tails I poured back into jugs as feints. I now have 3 gallons of feints at 160 proof. I feel like I have been very conservative with my cuts and that their could still be some good stuff in there. So my question is, what do you normally get out of an all feints run? I will dilute the three gallons to 40%abv and rerun it. Do you think it's worth the time or will it just be a bunch of heads and tails?

Don't throw it out, there's some good alcohol in there. Dilute to 30-40% and run it slow making cuts as usual.

I run a LM reflux so I dump all my feints in, dilute them down and run them twice to get a super fine neutral. If you run all of one type for an all feints run, you will probably be very happy with your results. There is plenty of good liquor in there along with lots of flavor. Since you have been saving it up it has been sitting and mellowing a bit too. Save up enough for a full charge on your still and go for it, it will be good.

Since I make mostly whiskey. I like to save a little fresh wash and cut the feints with that. It gives a nice product with a lot of flavor.

That's alot of work! I hate not getting neutral right the first time. Spirit runs seem to take a good chunk of time.

Your 3" like mine should be pissing out a little over a gallon an hour at azeo. It don't take long.

I ran 3 gallons of 160p feints in my little still. Ended up pulling out almost two more quarts of very clean ultra smooth 160p. Gonna let it sit in the gunsafe and use it for lemonade/apple pie for this summers block party/music/food festival in august. Hopefully I can hold onto it that long. Really glad I didn't toss it!

How many times do you guys rerun feints. So the heads and tails of this last run will have been run 3 times now. Is there anymore to be had? I would think that I got pretty much everything out of it by now. but maybe its worth saving for another feints run after finishing up generations 5-8 of the UJSSM

Some of my best results have been feints runs; I always have a feints jug (actually heads and tails, the original meaning of feints were tails only). I run a pot still and I have had excellent results doing a slow spirit run and being extra careful with my cuts, then age in a charred keg. I also routinely re-run feints 3-4 times and end up with a nice neutral. Never toss those feints.

I am a firm believer in feints. I have to say though, if I ran 3 gallons of 160 proof (cut down to 80 proof for safety and filtering making 6 gallons) I would get way more than 2 quarts of 160 proof back out of it. Closer to 2 gallons.

2 gallons of hearts? I got about 2.5 total but only took about two quarts of it as hearts.

I just dilute mine down and reflux the piss out of them. Gives me good separation and a real fine neutral. Perhaps the 54" of lava rock packing compresses the fractions that much better.
