Good for Sweet Feed whiskey?
Went by tractor supply and like many have said on here, most of their "sweet feed"
Has pellets. I found a feed store today selling this. It is their version of "sweet feed" and does NOT contain pellets. Will this work?

Re: Good for Sweet Feed whiskey?
I would not put a lot of faith in "grain products."

You are right. Just got home and opened it and it has pellets. TSC has the right stuff i believe but it is not sold in our store. I may have to order online.

I find the statement..."Do not feed to sheep ! May contain levels of copper that could be toxic." Just a little disturbing.
Getting hung up all day on smiles
Re: Good for Sweet Feed whiskey?
The copper wouldn't bother me, but it might bother the yeast.
It doesn't say what the grains are, so it's a bit of a gambol. They might even vary between batches.

Tito,
A while back there were a few threads here about TSC sweet feed. This was around the time I started stalking them for it.... Long story short in MANY of their stores they stopped carrying the "good" sweet feed (the majority of us were talking about Producers Pride Sweet Feed). The PP sweet feed in TSC now all has pellets (some here believe that is OK too... if I remember correctly the pellets with alfalfa are what you try to avoid but I have NO idea how to figure that one out)
Why not just make your own sweet feed.... It's just corn, oat, and barley with molasses mixed in. If you HD search the site you will find many different recipes for a "homemade" sweet feed.

Re: Good for Sweet Feed whiskey?
go to your local feed mill and get it mixed the way you want.
then buy the molly and add at mashing time
that way you get the grain you want
cost the same price as sweet feed anyway

its better to think like a fool but keep your mouth shut, then to open ur mouth and have it confirmed
Re: Good for Sweet Feed whiskey?
Yeah none of our feed stores carry barley. One can order a 50lb bag for $20. A bag of oats is $13 and cracked corn is $7, so for all three you would be looking at $40 plus molasses. Is that in line?

Well, that would be for 150 lbs vs. 50 lbs, but yeah.Tito wrote:Yeah none of our feed stores carry barley. One can order a 50lb bag for $20. A bag of oats is $13 and cracked corn is $7, so for all three you would be looking at $40 plus molasses. Is that in line?

What ScoD said.
Keep in mind that if you are not going to actually mash it, you will need the molasses or some other form of sugar for the yeast.
You can get feed grade molly for about $9 for a gallon or 5 gallons for $30 plus shipping. Going with your 150 lb grain bill I'd go with the 5 gallon bucket. It takes. Long time for molasses to go bad and you get a useful bucket with a lid that seals for free. you can never have too many of those in this hobby.
I've stopped fighting my inner demons. We're on the same side now.

Re: Good for Sweet Feed whiskey?
Tito..
I lot of the beer brewers will have group buys where a bunch of guys in a local region get together and buy a shit ton of grain and save money on bulk purchase.... Something like this: http://www.homebrewtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=174" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
Just a thought.
As far as molasses goes, two words.: Golden Barrel. http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 8#p7482438
Plus, you'll only have extra until the fermenter is empty...

Man, I wish I could find a local supplier for golden barrel. Shipping 5-gallon buckets is crazy expensive.

Look for a local restaurant supply store you might have to sign up for a membership whenever I get ready to run a batch of rum I order 2 gallons and a 25 pound sack of light brown sugar and they have it there the next day
