Off color in stripping run
Hey gang. Running my first 100% malted barley mash (5gal). All going well during mash and fermentingt process, now distilling and first 500 ml comes out green as all get out. Running it hot as a stripping run. Is this the "puke" I hear people talking about? Turned her down and clearing some in a new jar. But still not completely clear...I've never used barley as I'm partial to wheat.
Re: Off color in stripping run
I think I answered my own question when I took the still apart... Ugh. First time for everything. Causes? Too hot? Too much sediment found its way in? Insight appreciated
Re: Off color in stripping run
Blue is likely to be copper from a dirty Liebig or still head. It will get cleaned up by the spirit run.
Cloudiness early in a stripping run is normally puke from running too fast or too full and is nothing to worry about. A knob of butter may help. Cloudiness late in the strip is normal if you are running to low abvs to get flavor. The spirit run cleans it up.
