Any use for the wash after distillation?

Post by ShooterNZ »

How do you discard the wash after distilling it?

Down the drain or...

Is it useful in gardens , composts, worm farms or maybe something else?

IS there any harm in it in the septic tank system?

Depends.
Wash of an on the grain or fruit stripping run I let cool down and dump on the compost.
Hot wash I sometimes use against weed, but cold I dump on my lawn, where it soon sinks into the ground and adds to the groundwater. (In about 25 years it will be pumped up again for drinking water.)

I think your septic tank does not like hot wash but as you do not ferment something harmful, a cool wash should be no problem. When you take medicins it gets worse.

After distilling I pour the clear cooled wash down the drain. Been doing it for 3 years. No problem with my septic system (yet). I distill with a thumper, I put the mash in there, grains and all then distill. After distilling I let it cool then dump it in the compost.

Please be careful with hot liquids near trees! It can kill the roots and can even kill your trees.

Or use part of it to sour mash or backset a new ferment ...

Or use a heat exchanger to at least reap the energy in the close to 100C boiler left-overs. The energy stored there will help you create mashing water at 60C with ease.

im lucky ive got a rodding point for the drain next to where i distill so i just remove the cover put the lease and backset straight down the rodding point with a little flush whilst the water for the condenser is flowing it pushes it down with ease no blockages yet.

Drill pumped into the slop sink, or used as backset as described above.

If it matches schedule I leave some in the boiler as backset/dunder for nest mash or distillation.

But, if you have critters (goats or cows) you can feed them wash and they will drink it.

Now you mention it: it seems the backset of whisky in Scotland was banned from pastures where sheep grazed, because sheep are very prone to copper poisoning.
