Check ‘em from time to time.
I once noticed a big hunk chipped off the bottom ball of mine.
Wasn’t getting as much hooch as I thought get for a while.

Shouting and shooting, I can't let them catch me...
Re: Oh for the love of God...
I've been taping the bottoms onto the tubes since I took a bottom off thinking it was the top and sliding the hydrometer straight through it onto the floor.
I've broken enough to know that I always have to have spares, that includes cylinders.

Made me think after I posted of how many thermometers I broke using a sling wet /dry thermometer not using it but throwing tools on the case.

ALMOST did this a couple days ago, broke the outer case but the hydrometer inside was ok.acfixer69 wrote:Made me think after I posted of how many thermometers I broke using a sling wet /dry thermometer not using it but throwing tools on the case.

Re: Oh for the love of God...
My last breakage was a 100ml measuring cylinder that I dropped, smashing the base but not the cylinder. I Araldited the cylinder onto an upside down 4" glass dish. I doubt I'll ever knock it over.

Too many to count when I started the hobby. Mostly handling errors when rinsing them under the tap. I made a few holders from SS wire and haven't had another breakage since.

Hope you had all of your fingers ( and toes ) crossed before posting lol!acfixer69 wrote:As many as it take ??? I haven't broke even one yet that's the truth. I almost did once in the fermenter because I leave it in there till its finished
I still have my original from 2009 (knock on wood).

Re: Oh for the love of God...
Had one stolen by an ex, one broken by an ex, and one broken in shipping. Now that I'm in a more stable place in life I've had the same one for a couple years.

I'm only on #2. I foolishly set the original on the drying rack by the sink. Wife broke it.. so, basically - all my fault.
Re: Oh for the love of God...
I have these, they're much nicer than using a single 0-100. Incredibly thin and fragile though.hpby98 wrote:eBay is your friend, plus they’re calibrated to 20c

My first hydrometer got broken on the draining board like so many do.
My second two got broken in transit because they were shipped from china with NO protective packaging whatsoever!
Re: Oh for the love of God...
I broke two in a row a month ago. Dropped the first, ordered a replacement and immediately broke that one pulling it out of the parrot when I started going sideways before it was fully out of the metal tube.

I handle my hydrometers like they're made of very thin glass and have had good luck (knock on wood). I'm still using the first one I ever bought for brewing back in '91.LWTCS wrote: I still have my original from 2009 (knock on wood).

Re: Oh for the love of God...
It’s floating thermometers I have crappy luck with. After the third broke I just stopped using them. I have some of those stick on aquarium thermometers on my ferment barrels that have worked great so far. I use a damn kitchen meat thermometer for mashing.
The item that I’m surprised has lasted for so many years, knock on wood, is the tall glass sample tube I put my hydrometer and proof/trails meter in.

Re: Oh for the love of God...
Cant remeber how many ive broke!, broke one one day just after I'd fired the still up, tapped it against the parrot while putting it in. Didnt have a spare, had to shut still down and drive half hour for another, got back home, pulled it out of the case and dropped it straight onto the concrete , shook my head and laughed and just did the run without one!.

Had mine for about 5 years . Couldn’t understand why all folk keep braking them .
One day stepped backwards ... Crunch .... never leave them on the floor

Re: Oh for the love of God...
Have never broke any glass hydrometers or alcoholometers, had mine for maaany years/decades. Most of the time I'm digging out my refractometers when I don't need to be exact (don't completely trust them), but if I'm feeling overly OCD I carefully dig out the glass.
People say that I'm a bad influence. I say the world's already f#cked -- I'm just adding to it.
Re: Oh for the love of God...
i sacrificed the last one with a surge through the parrot. it didn't survive the flight to the ceiling, never mind the landing.
these things are herd animals. they will commit suicide when they get lonely...always keep at least a pair. the more you have the less likely they are to break.
I know why Larry's has lasted so long...the ones he sells are tough as nails and pretty darn accurate.

New one I bought is taller then my test jar so any high proof liquids I can't measure ffs. Didn't think of that. Ow I need to buy
A shorter alcohol meter or taller test jar. They're both 10 bucks. Shit. Lol

Re: Oh for the love of God...
I just broke another last night. Got bold and was using it to stir while proofing down some neutral in my 1 liter graduated cylinder. I hear a little crack and all the little metal shot came out. Doh. Luckily I now buy them in twos. Just placed an order for another two.
Re: Oh for the love of God...
i just learned the little bulb on the bottom of a PH meter is as equally delicate as a hydro.
merde.

I've broken a few. Always at an inconvenient time.
