Spacers for worm

Spacers for worm
I was wondering if anyone could explain to me how I should put spacers in between the coils of a worm I'm building?
Is there a certain way I need to do it or can I just put them randomly around the coils? I know this seems like a dumb question but Any help is appreciated.

Re: Spacers for worm
I've read some people take very short lengths of like 1/2" copper pipe and solder them in place between the coils.
Just make sure the worm is "downhill" all the way.

Do you think it would work the same if I was to use small pieces of wood and pipe clamps?fizzix wrote:I've read some people take very short lengths of like 1/2" copper pipe and solder them in place between the coils.

My idea was to put pieces wood of under the coils ( to act as the spacer) and fasten them with pipe clamps or to put the pieces of wood to the sides of coils and put 2 clamps per piece of wood Like have a clamp on bottom and clamp on top.
Does this make since to you? You think it'll work?

Re: Spacers for worm
This from one without metalworking skills but who tried to re-do a worm that an expert got wrong.
Firstly, get a COIL of tube (or a suitable length from a coil). This will be annealed copper that can be worked..
I would have three 'supports'. NOT four. Easier to adjust tube to it...
Like having three wheels on a rack or whatever...
Do NOT have two supports, the tube can 'bend wrong' (up or down) between the supports.
Next time I would start with a rigid ring or circle of metal (heavy stainless/ very heavy copper.....) underneath; then fix the three supports to that so that the tube must stay at the angle you fix it at.
Figure and mark the positions of the tube on each support (perhaps use copper angle strips, easy to do by bending flat copper; or you could adapt larger copper tube?) and cut slots for the tube to sit in? BEFORE you fix the supports to the ring/ circle metal base.
Before final fixing everything together, roll a ball bearing through the coil; if it stops anywhere you are in trouble....
Anyway that is what I would think about.
Have fun.

I'm not really sure what you're sayingThe Baker wrote:This from one without metalworking skills but who tried to re-do a worm that an expert got wrong.

Re: Spacers for worm
Hes saying it needs to slope down hill all the way thru the worm. The ball bearing will develop momentum and roll up hill to a point which is a puddling for smearing to happen.
Its very simple

Yeah I got that part

Do you think you could post a picture of your worm? Or an example of one the way your talking about? The Baker wrote:Can't make it any simpler.

Just cut up 1" pvc pipe and put in between the coils. Zip tie or glue

Thank you. That's kinda the idea I had but with small 1in blocks of wood and pipe clamps. I also have lots of 1in pvc pipes when I get my new copper is will play with both and see what works best!ShineonCrazyDiamond wrote:Just cut up 1" pvc pipe and put in between the coils. Zip tie or glue

Re: Spacers for worm
Thanks to those who explained what I was talking about.
With the pictures. I don't do pictures.
Now read again what I said, there should be some nuggets there for you.

Yes now I get what you're saying. I guess I just needed a visual. But thank you for your helpThe Baker wrote:Thanks to those who explained what I was talking about.
