Triple flavor angle pot still head - a simple design

Post by still crazy »

I had recently done a drawing for a triple angle pot still design
I had 2 member express interest and want builds of this set up.
Here are a few pics for your enjoyment.

A few notes
the owner wanted a temp port and this was added to the top part of the 2" riser
this design shown the buyer wanted a liebig condenser
this design could also be used with a worm condenser
this liebig was made with 1/2 inner, 3/4 outer,(2) 3/4 x 1/2 x 1/2 tees, (2) 1/2 barb inserts < simple design
the 45 and 90 degee street elbows were not soldered will be teflon or flour pasted seals
to see how I seal using teflon tape see this link

The first pic is the design drawing

This one shows the 45 degree downward angle
Pot triple 2.jpg
This pic shows the 90 degree to the side angle
Pot triple 3.jpg
This one shows the 45 degree upward angle

I have heard that the angle of lyne arm will make a difference in flavor, but have never experienced it first hand. You now have the capability to do some tests. You should split a mash in two batches. Run 1/2 with the angle up, 1/2 with the angle down, and do some double blind tests on the resultant spirit. I am curious how important the angle is.

If this bump is not appropriate..well never mind. I am a newbie. I really liked your idea of changing the output angle. I am wondering how it turned out. Did you notice a difference in the flavor after you tested it? I would like to be able to produce a decent vodka with a pot (wife likes it) as well as the stuff I want to make..Thanks

Just for reference I only ran the 1st example and found it did what I wanted , 45% (90 proof)hearts with a sweet corn taste .
If it ain't broke don't fix it .

I do know a few others have run both methods 2 and 3 to there liking

On hobby scale stills the different angles make very little difference... Things like vapor speed and surface area come into play and a skinny piece of copper doesn't help with either of those... That's why CM reflux columns were invented...

I thank what happens is the condensed vapor runs down the side wall.back into the pot, so little is refluxed .
if it had something for it to "land on" it would make this more effective.
maybe ridges?centering rings?
