Packing a lyne arm

Postby Kymoonyshine79 » Mon Nov 14, 2011 12:52 pm

I was curious if packing the neck on a pot still, without a cooling jacket above the packing, will still have a reflux effect (just significantly reduced rate)? I just want to raise it just a few %. I'm not trying to acheve 93% or anything. Thanks for the help and as always, thanks for a great website!

You would get some parasitic reflux yep, would loose a little flavour and you would want to be very carefull to use a well cleared wash - if you packed your lyne arm and overfilled with an on the grain that puked, then (as i understnad it) potentialy you could block the arm with puked grain caught in the packing turning your still into a bomb.

Not to say you couldnt or shouldn't do it. Just think it through carefully and make any necessary changes to still design (include a pressure popper) or method (only run a well cleared wash).

Ok the title of the thread says lyne arm but your post says neck like your talking about the column?

The lyne arm would depend on the positioning of the lyne arm. If it was tilted up and away from the column yes it would create a little more reflux. That could run back to the column. How much would depend on a lot of things.

If it is tilted down away from the column no you will not get anything out of it. Because what is being condensed will come out the output not go back to the column.

If you are talking about packing the column. Yes it will give it a little more reflux. How much will depend on many things too.

I would pack a little in the column that you can easily retrieve or adjust rather than the neck or lyne arm!
