DOES SIZE MATTER

Postby chappy » Thu Dec 01, 2011 7:05 pm

My question is basically this ... Is there some guideline to sizes in things like. If you have a 55 gal boiler do you need a 3'' stand pipe then what size thumper? How do you figure what size stand pipe you need . How do you determine what size worm you need?

There are some good calculators on the parent site. For most if not all the questions you have asked. By stand pipe are you talking column or lyne arm? Column greater width = faster. Greater hight = more purity. I would say read through the pot still section on the parent site. And see if that doesn't help you. If your still left with questions come back and ask.

And you don't have to shout. We can here you loud and clear.

Your condenser as always is sized to match the maximum available power input. Some folks cascade condensers, alternatively called a pre-condenser, as they don't often actually run at full power. My guide for pot stills and this is just my opinion, is MINIMUM riser is 1", 2" up to 100 litres, bigger for larger boilers. For dedicated strip boilers as big as you can manage.

If all the parts are in proportion then a big boiler needs more heat, a bigger riser/column, and a bigger condenser. A big boiler with small 'other parts' will take more than a day to finish. Hobby size should finish in a 18hr day or three 8hr days :D
