Sphere Shaped Turnip Still with 4" Column

Post by Rain Distillate »

Copper Porn

I just bought ten feet of 16 oz and ten feet of 20 oz copper sheet.
16 oz 3'x10' *NEED HELP FINDING TURNIP DESIGNS*
16 oz 3'x10' *NEED HELP FINDING TURNIP DESIGNS*
My plan is to make a sphere shaped turnip still with a 4" column and all the trimmings. Haven't decided on what column style to build but that's my future self's problem. My goal is to get this boiler and head together so its SOLID! I want be able to pass this still down 10 generations.
20 oz 3'x10' *NEED HELP FINDING TURNIP DESIGNS*
20 oz 3'x10' *NEED HELP FINDING TURNIP DESIGNS*
Anyone know of any good turnip designs/templates? I'm going rather large. The old lady is tired of all the buckets all over the house so I got a 45 Gallon fermenter a little while back (now she just complains about 1 haha) + I'd like to be able to do the barrel in 2 runs. So I need at least a 30-35 gallon boiler to account for heads space for half the barrel- 23 Gallons of wash (give or take a gallon or two) The old lady don't like me running the still every week so I'm increasing size on all to speed up run times and increase total volume. (currently I've been doing back to back runs in my keg with my 2" column anyway but were talking an all day event(which the old lady hates) for only 2 gallons of hearts (gallon for me & a gallon for my quadriplegic buddy) And its not easy to shutdown my rig, take off my heavy column, dump the backset, refill with new mash aaaaaand reattach column by myself. Its beginning to wear me down lol. I figure one barrel of mash a month, 2 runs a month will give me plenty (I also supply my handicapped buddy, hes got a keg still on 1 1/4" column/flake but it don't produce like mine, and he knows it :D (hes also got a lot of brass inline and no matter how much I bug him I can't get him to remove it...maybe that's why he likes mine so much...its cllllllllean :D .... The way my mother in law has been enjoying my shine soaked up in fruit, I better keep it coming to stay on her good side.
Its been two years since my miserable attempt at a copper boiler... before I gave up after a month of working on it and ended up going with a keg 2 years later (took the time to slowly purchase parts for the condenser and column while I was in trades school)

However after recently helping a buddy create a copper thumper I think I'm ready to take one more whack at it.
This was his design his everything. Hes a quadriplegic that has hand function still. I was just an extra set of hands in this, but if he could make this with just a little help from me....I should be able to make this still! He definitely inspired me to give a copper boiler one more go!

The entire project probably won't be finished until next year lol but I will be posting pictures as I progress step by step. Thanks for reading and......STAY TUNED! MUCH FUN TO COME!
Cheers,

Love the documentation. I usually plan it on CAD, then do a mock up with cardboard to make sure all my dimensions align and I have the proper tolerances. Keep the updates coming!

What's CAD?

The cardboard is a good idea, I may try it.

Stopped by the flea market today to look for stilln stuff.
I need a solid tear drop/round shape to planish the sphere shape on. Anyone got any cheap ideas?

Also I've looked everywhere (probably 10 stores) for a planishing hammer and still no luck finding one. I'm going to 1 more antique shop in an hour and hopefully I can find an old one laying around.

CArDbord, does the job too...

Well, this looks like the start of some very enjoyable copper porn...
It's not every day we get to see a turnip shaped still.
You'll have to do a lot of copper bashing to get that shape out of that plate.
Do you envision something like an Alembic form, or will the bottom also be round..?

I'm ready to take my time and have this come out the way I want it too. I haven't decided on an EXACT style yet. I spent 3 hours looking for turnip designs and only saw about 10 turnip stills with no design plans attached.

To get the hammered styled texture would it be easier to hammer the pattern on the sheet before I shape and bend? Or does this pattern come naturally from planishing?

The hammer marks come from forming the plate with a hammer, well a nylon mallet. Another way to make your dish is with metal spinning a disk of copper.

Is there a homemade way of the spinning method?

I don't think there is a homemade way of spinning copper. You need a really large lathe and a wood form to press the copper to. I would be interested to find out though. I spent many hours 30 yrs ago watching a old WWII vet spin copper. I still have a small pot and 2 lamps he made for me. He had PTSD (they didn't know what it was then) and he would spent all day making parts and drinking wine. He wouldn't sell any cause he said most people didn't appricate his work.

After asking the question I watched all those videos lol. Thanks though. Very cool technique. What I wouldn't give to find someone nearby that spun. That'd give me exactly what I was looking for!

This is a problem like making flat maps of the surface of the earth. (I suppose you know the earth is sort of round!)

I hope this can be of some help:

I was thinking about the same. I traced out a 21 1/4" circle on cardboard last night and made a jig to give me a circle slightly larger (24") for the raised lip. I think this will be my base as well as the receiver for the sphere body. Instead of bending the edge up at a straight 90 degree angle maybe bang it into a 45 to receive the round body portion? because its sphereish?

Slip joint on bottom of body as well as reverse slip joint on the base lid. click together. bang down the seam. flux and solder?

Just ideas I've been racking around in my head.

Well, one method is spinning, like others suggested.
Unfortunately, this technique requires a big bastard of a lathe and some special tools to get it done right.
The worst part would be the form tool. However, this could be made out of wood...one would shape a "bowl" form or a half sphere, so to speak.
Then that form would be used to spin the copper plate over, and I mean literally "over".

Another method I have used for a project is to make a bowl-shaped piece of wood (the harder the better, so don't use pine or such).
Then anneal the copper plate (disc) and gently hammer it to shape in the bowl form.Use a nylon dead weight hammer, or you'll stand there hammering when Santa Claus comes by.
This method requires frequently annealing of the copper, as it will work harden as you progress.Planish the two half parts to a desired smooth surface (auto repair shops use hammers like this to do the fenders etc.).
Two similar bowls would form the finished boiler part. Then you just have to decide whether or not to solder ...use rivets..or both.
If it were me, I'd roll a ring out of copper or brass (won't matter as it is supposed to be outside). the ring should be Pi times the middle diameter (this means subtract one material thickness on the outside circumference)
Drill some holes in the circumference of that ring you just made (they should match the rivets or be 1/10 of a mm bigger).
Let the spacing be around 20 to 30 mm, to be sure you get a good connection.
Anneal the rivets and proceed to rivet the whole thing in one way around.Get a buddy to hold against the inside, if you can't reach in and hammer simultaneously.
When you have finished riveting, clean everything around the riveted parts thoroughly.
Apply flux and solder the parts around the rivets.
You'll now end up with a sturdy connection, that is totally leak free and doesn't require any sealant as you want to do a run.
Clean the mess up, you made inside, before proceeding with the next step.

Edit: The video Shady linked to, shows a method with a sandbag made out of leather. If you have one it's the best tool, custom body shops use them, too.
Unfortunately, such things are not standard equipment in the shed at home.

Update on progress. I decided to start on the onion. Its the same concept as the boiler and it would get me used to making sphere shapes but on a smaller scale. Here's my design I have roughed out for this still.
Still drawing paint.png

A lot more work to do.... fortunately I have plenty of time!!! No rush.
I have about 4-5 hrs of hand banging on this 9.5 inch "sphere" so I can only imagine what the boiler will take me (weeks).
