List of potential thumpers?
I have an 8 gallon milk can still and would like to add a thumper.
I am not financially inclined at the moment, so this upgrade needs to be as low budget as possible.
I really would like to use a 2-3 gallon glass carboy or jar cause being able to watch the thumper keg work would be awesome! But I am well aware of the sites rules against glassware and I deffinitely can't afford a boroscillicate laboratory grade vessel that large, plus I don't feel like getting fussed at by RAD...
...again, so that idea is out.
What I am really hoping is a list of suggestions of 2-3 gallon vessels that would make a good thumper?
Thanks in advamce for the help.
If it makes a differencw, I have a bit of 1.5" copper tubing handy.

you could use a sixth barrel. i realize, might be bigger than your asking for. but, they're easy to turn into a thumper

Ok I looked up a 6th barrel. I dont know where I would find one of those amd for cheap.
Plus I am unsure if there would be a down side to running a 5 gallon thumper on an 8 gallon still.

Negative on the glass thumper. Not safe at all. Thermal shock and pressure pulses can be catastrophic. You will never get support for a glass thumper on this site...it's against our rules. You should know this already.

Re: List of potential thumpers?
match your thumper size to your boiler size , or , in your case ; use a keg for a thumper . You'll find much more versatility as opposed to using a smaller , non glass ,thumper .

Walmart 16-24qt stainless steel stock pot $25<, pack of 24 medium binder clips $6, and $2 ptfe to seal the lid.
Or scrounge the equivalent around the house, garage sales.

the bar owner is not the keg owner! rule #6 applies to stealing also!nuntius01 wrote:you should be able to get one for around 25$. but if you know anyone that runs a bar u can probably get one for free.Hillbilly Popstar wrote:What's a 6th barrel?nuntius01 wrote:you could use a sixth barrel. i realize, might be bigger than your asking for. but, they're easy to turn into a thumper

Re: List of potential thumpers?
With an 8 gallon boiler you want at least 1/3 to 1/2 the size for the thumper. If you look around you can find a great deal on 5 gallon milk cans. I have collected 4 of them and paid around $30 each. Made one into an essential oil still and making another into a botanical still for running neutrals.

What I really want is a 24 gallon milk can and then ill use my 8 gallon as a thumper/steam powered still.Bushman wrote:With an 8 gallon boiler you want at least 1/3 to 1/2 the size for the thumper. But in the meantime, ill probably go with one of the 3 gallon milkcans.
I have no idea where you're getting them that cheap tho.

I got one in North Dakota at an antique store and the other 3 in Washington State. They wanted $35 each but since I bought all of them they took $30.Hillbilly Popstar wrote:What I really want is a 24 gallon milk can and then ill use my 8 gallon as a thumper/steam powered still.Bushman wrote:With an 8 gallon boiler you want at least 1/3 to 1/2 the size for the thumper.
