Boiling Water in a Paper Cup

Post by MichiganCornhusker »

I've seen the comments about boiling water in a paper cup in a campfire and I had to go and find out:

Cup with water on burner:

And, the fire, you can sort of see the water line at about 1-1/2":

So the story checks out.

Only thing I would add for copper pot boilers with soldered seams is to be careful if you are using some kind of shroud around the pot to try to make more efficient use of your fire's heat.
The temps above the liquid line can get much hotter, so you could still have a seam split up the side above the liquid if using a shroud. That is exactly what happened with my cup.
Shouting and shooting, I can't let them catch me...

I actually watched water boil at room temp (70*f) back in school. We were talking about a/c systems & going over how temps & pressures go hand in hand.

if you want to boil water in a paper cup more than once, put the cup with water in it

next to the fire, heat a rock quite hot in the fire and transfer it into the paper cup

repeat as necessary until the cup wears out.
